Seems he was pretty screwed up over the possibility of losing his baby, and he just spiralled out of control. Apparently, there were no illegal drugs found in the apartment, but I'm thinking an accidental sleeping pill overdose.

What counts as illegal drugs? Would taking over-the-counter drugs beyond proper indications be considered illegal?

" Would taking over-the-counter drugs beyond proper indications be considered illegal? " No, just ill advised. Illegal would be drugs like heroin, cocaine and the like. A grey area would be prescription drugs not prescribed to him. Illegal, but not illegal drugs, per se.

what, exactly, does "contribute" mean?

He certainly used them. Maybe the illegal drugs damaged the nucleus responsible for sleep? Maybe the drugs prevented the liver from detoxifying the sleeping pills? He doesn't have to use illegal drugs on that same day to have a contribution from them.

"He certainly used them" ? need the source for that claim. I hope the answer to this wager will be the autopsy report which will determine damage to nucleus(?) and other factors illegal drugs, if any, were involved. toxology levels etc. Illegal drugs must be present in his system to have officially contributed to his death.

you should weigh in on the question @ getsatisfaction by clicking help then the getsatisfaction link the question there is:

"Should Hubdub insiders who settle questions be allowed to make predictions?

To date, Hubdub staff who settle questions have also participated in making predictions on those and other questions. We have strived to be as objective as possible on every settlement and settlements are regularly cross-checked. However some users perceive that this conflict of interest may cause us to incorrectly settle questions for our benefit. We can change the rules to:
(1) No restriction (status quo)
(2) No predicting on questions within their category
(3) No predicting on any questions

Thoughts?

The NYC medical examiner's office has ruled that Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. - cnn.com breaking news

I don't understand how this could be settled as "No" he didn't take illegal drugs. If he took Oxceycontin, which was not prescribed for him, plus other drugs that were not presecibed, that makes it illegal.

Not seeing any reports that the OxyContin was not prescribed to him, but even if it wasn't, it's a prescribed medication, not an illegal drug.

My deepest condolences to all of those who loved Heath Ledger.

I made a bad bet here... the smart bet here was a cover up.

Who needs illegal drugs when a person can "legally" obtain two different narcotic pain killers, two different types of sleeping pills, Xanax, and generic valium? Pharmacies should differentiate themselves from street dealers and network their 'scripts to prevent these "accidents" from happening. I heard that some of these meds were obtained in Europe, so such a networking solution might be logistically difficult.

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT LEGAL PRESCRIPTION DRUGS USED IMPROPERLY, IS AN ILLEGAL USE OF LEGAL DRUGS. THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION SHOULD AT LEAST BE UNDETERMINED AS OF YET SINCE I DON'T THINK IT HAS BEEN RELEASED WHETHER ALL OF THE DRUGS WERE PRESCRIBED TO HIM.
