Background:

A Montreal-raised TV comedy writer is putting John Lennon's original handwritten lyrics to Give Peace a Chance up for auction at Christie's in London next month.

Gail Renard, now 55 and living in London, obtained the lyrics -- scrawled on a piece of cardboard in black magic marker -- during Lennon's bed-in for peace at Montreal's Queen Elizabeth hotel in 1969.

Renard was 16 when she managed to sneak into the bed-in. She says Lennon took an immediate liking to her and gave her the lyrics himself.

Christie's said Gail Renard sold the item Thursday at its rock and pop memorabilia sale for 421,250 pounds – about C$840,000.

That's about C$200,000 over what it was expected to fetch.
