When this question was created, Tiger's winning streak started at 5

UPI reports that Tiger's win today at Accenture marked his sixth straight tournament worldwide ...
<http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Sports/2008/02/24/woods_easily_wins_63rd_tour_title/5762/>

The Associated Press reports that he won his fifth straight tournament
<http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/24/AR2008022400874.html>

Golf World reports "He also has won four straight PGA Tour events and six of the last seven while winning six straight official tournaments around the world."

That's strange that there's a discrepancy. I would lean towards going with the AP total- the golf world one seems to be just one guy on his blog. I must admit I don't know too much about UPI...

Maybe this could be simplified if we changed it to PGA tour victories

I'm partial to Reuters (full disclosure not included), -- and they report (emphasis added):

"By Mark Lamport-Stokes

MARANA, Arizona (Reuters) - Tiger Woods sounded an ominous warning to his rivals with talk of a perfect season after cruising to a sixth consecutive tournament victory at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Sunday."
<http://www.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idUSSP23510520080225>

Reuters UK also reports:
"It was his third triumph in 10 editions of the elite World Golf Championships (WGC) events and his sixth successive tournament win worldwide."
<http://uk.reuters.com/article/golfNews/idUKN2426426920080224>

Maybe this could be simplified if we changed it to PGA tour victories

Sure, you could do that (that would start with four in a row on the PGA Tour, which began in September), or you could wait for an AP kill and correction -- it shouldn't take long. What was the source you relied upon when you wrote the question? I'm of the view that "six" is the accurate number.

All of which made me think of another question: "Will Tiger Woods tie Byron Nelson's record of 11 consecutive PGA Tour victories?

Feel free to use any of it, if you wish, in your question.

Six is the accurate number

In reverse order - WGC, Dubai, Buick, Target World challenge, tour championship, BMW championship

I've changed the background

Five, as reported by the AP, was the number what I used when writing the question. If six is the correct number then great- we'll go with that. Should the text in the question part be changed as well? I'm talking about the part that says "no more wins- will lose next tournament". I just don't want to mislead people with that still in there.

Here's an update on the perceived discrepancy between media outlets:

Doug Ferguson, the award-winning golf scribe of the Associated Press wrote about Tiger's record, on Feb 19, 2008 (before the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship). The wire service story was carried world-wide:

<http://news.yahoo.com/s/cpress/20080220/ca_pr_on_sp/golf_match_play>
[emphasis added]

"His winning streak now is a little more complicated to compute, but it is no less impressive.

"Since finishing second on Sept. 3 at the Deutsche Bank Championship, Woods won the last two playoff events in the FedEx Cup and opened his '08 season on the PGA Tour by winning the Buick Invitational by eight shots. He also won his unofficial Target World Challenge in California against a 16-man field by seven shots. On the European Tour, he rallied from four shots down to win the Dubai Desert Classic.

"Unofficially, that's five straight wins spread over five months."

In an email, today, Doug amplified on that:

"The Target World Challenge, which other media outlets used, was merely an exhibition. The money is not official. There are no world ranking points assigned. It is not an official part of any recognized tour around the world. It is part of the silly season, no different from the Skins Game, or those "Battle at Bighorn" matches Tiger used to play.
"Therefore, it should not be included for the record."

I wonder how Tiger counts it ... ;-)

appreciate all for bringing accuracy to this great prediction market.
so as I understand it, Tiger Woods has won 5 in a row, so the next 4 events he will have to win
to make it 9 plus.
possible could someone post what the next 4 matches are called that will count toward his streak so we can follow match by match? I will look for individual markets to wager on each match as well. gonna be exciting!
thanks in advance.

so if we're going with the streak standing at 5 then background info needs to be changed back to 5, correct?

OK robmar, I'll go with your suggestion

Woods is the three-time defending champion of this tournament and on this course, and he is paying attention more to his swing than his streak, which is at five on the PGA Tour, six worldwide, seven including his charity event near the holidays.

Alright, I created this question but I'm still confused about how it's going to be settled (since I don't get to make the decision and I should have made it more clear to begin with).

Tiger's currently playing in the WGC-CA Championship at Doral. If he pulls another comeback and wins this I would consider that to be his 7th win in a row. Is there any agreement on this?

I'm going on the fact that the settlement details mention PGA and International events, but do not mention charity events, such as the Target World Challenge.

i think that if he loses at Doral, the answer is 7.
posted 41 weeks ago
I agree with robmar that his current record, going into the Doral is 6.

And that the Target World Challenge isn't included. (See comment 6: "It is not an official part of any recognized tour around the world.")
posted 41 weeks ago
Oh wait -- he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, so it would be, as rohan said, 7.

(I'm at sixes and sevens with this answer ;-)
