Making ethanol from corn makes as much sense as making paper from trees.

Though not probable, did you consider that maybe :
(i) He meant it to be a good thing?
(ii) He thinks that making paper from trees is bad?

*nods*....good point. I wonder if there could be a way to subsidize paper produced from corn; thereby saving the rainforests, curbing global warming, saluting AlGore and raising taxes all in one, fell, swoop?
gawd, what am I saying???

Guys the solution is in Amsterdam :-P ... No kidding, if Gore were serious about saving the planet and if America REALLY wanted a great source of everything from food to clothing to paper, then we'd legalize the farming of Hemp!
That's right, an acre of Hemp produces 4 times as much paper as as an acre of trees, is what I've heard, also, Hemp seeds are very nutritious and can be ground and used as a sub for wheat floor and many other cooking uses and it also makes great clothing material.
So please, if America Really wanted a solution, it is right there and some 75 - 100 years ago, hemp was everywhere in this country, in fact, it was soooo prevalent that Americans used to just travel down roads and they'd often times be lined with hemp in many places.
It was a huge commodity and we absolutely need to use this vital resource if we really want to lower the prices of many products and have and alternative to whacking down trees.

P.S. And in times like these of skyrocketing hops prices (up nearly quadruple in 8 months in some cases) which may cause some brews to go up in price, I hear a little substance that makes people a little happier is also available in Amsterdam and can be grown quite easily :-) ... But that is another story :-P
