Who will be the next King or Queen of England?

Background: Who will be nominated King or Queen of England upon Queen Elizabeth II's passing?

Category Editor note: For those who don't follow these monarchy matters or who have never seen Henry V, "Harry" is a nickname for "Henry". So the beloved Prince Harry of popular press fame is in fact Prince Henry of Wales.

Good question - maybe it is Harry's cousin or something... :-)

Harry is a nickname. His name is Prince Henry. See "Issue" section of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_II_of_the_United_Kingdom

@itheobserver:

Actually, if you go to his official web site, http://www.princeofwales.gov.uk/personalprofiles/princewilliamprinceharry/princeharry/biography/index.html it explains:

Prince Harry is the younger son of The Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales.
He was born at 4.20pm on 15th September, 1984 at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, in central London. He weighed 6lb 14oz.
On 21st December 1984, Prince Henry Charles Albert David was christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Robert Runcie, in St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

So if somebody else is the King or Queen of Scotland, or Northern Ireland, then it doesn't matter?

By any chance was this market made by an American?

Actually, there is no King or Queen of England and probably wont be ever, if there isn't some magnificent strange event in the future.

By 2012? Given QM Elizabeth making it to 100+ I imagine HRH will still be Queen of whatever she is Queen of; if that qualifies as other then seems to me Charles is out of luck. Kings are not 'nominated' so barring multiple deaths Wills and 'the ginger one' known as Harry are respectively unlikely in this time frame and exceedingly unlikely in any time frame (Wills would have to pass on before fathering a child in wedlock, or abdicate like his great grand uncle Eddie)... the interesting aspect is whether there is any chance that Charles could be prevailed upon to step aside for Wills - seems very unlikely.

The final English queen was Anne - although a Stuart, she was born in England. Some of course would say the last English monarch of England was Queen Elizabeth l. Extra points for anyone who knows a) who was the King immediately before Elizabeth (there's a clue - no conspiracy theories based on the Prince and the Pauper) or b) who was the Queen immediately after the death of that same Prince? (Both answers are arguable, but were news to me!)

a) Your wrong, there was no King immediately before Elizabeth the First. Elizabeth became King after Mary the First who was Queen after the Lady Jane Grey who was Queen after Edward the Seventh.

b) Queen after Edward the Seventh was therefore the Lady Jane Grey.

@ciraric:

Um: Check your facts - Jun 2, 2009 ... 1953: Elizabeth II is crowned as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

However you came to the impression that she became King of anything escapes me!

1) I meant Elizabeth the First.
2) Damn typo.

Ok, well that was before my time :-)

This question suspends in three years... if good old ER is still the queen at that point, is it settled as other/none? Or was that option specifically intended to mean it will be someone else/there will be no monarch? Cheers!

No, no - Queen Elizabeth (the living) is the first Queen of Great Britain. There is no Queen (or other monarch) of England. The crowns of Scotland and England were united in 1707.

BTW, Mary's husband Philip of Spain was King... which explains the Armada.
