Settlement requested Wed 30th Jul 9:53am PDT by ironman288: It's official now, the letter is sent:

The meeting between Murphy and the Favre camp comes a day after he faxed his request for reinstatement to the league office, following through on statements made during the offseason that he wanted to end his brief retirement.

Previous action withdrawn Thu 31st Jul 8:05am PDT by mrperfkt[Admin]: Question will be reopened at this time, as most recent stories state: "GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)—Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy traveled to Mississippi to meet with quarterback Brett Favre and his agent James “Bus” Cook on Wednesday, in an apparent attempt to talk Favre out of reporting to camp later this week.

Meanwhile, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell took no action on Favre’s request for reinstatement Wednesday—giving the sides more time to work out a resolution."

However, I think it should settle once it is clear that he has come out of retirement (e.g. NFL accepts reinstatement; Packers take him back or trade him)...rather than waiting to see if he actually takes a snap. My interpretation of the question is will he come out of retirement to play (not come out of retirement...and then play).

So when is the settlement on this market? Opening day, or the last game of the season?

It will remain unsettled unless he comes out of retirement and plays at which time it can be settled. If he does not come out of retirement before end of season then at end of season question should be settled.

I'd love to jump on this because I don't think he'll change his mind, but with a settlement date at the END of the season, it just opens up too many other possibilities.

"According to ESPN, Favre was reached by the Mississippi Sun Herald Wednesday afternoon. He said of reports, "it's all rumor." And he also sent a text message to the paper saying there's "No reason for it," referring to the media frenzy surrounding these reports."

Notice that Favre DID NOT deny it?!?! He said RUMOR, that is a total change from his before comments, NO ... So, I think he was not "lying" by saying it's rumor and not denying it outright! He'll be back :-D

yeah nfl.com seems to be pretty sure he's coming back, should be official in the next two weeks now.

I think this settlement is hokey. "to play"?
He hasn't played anything this year yet.

This question isn't over yet.
Read the given web link:
"The commissioner is taking no action today," league officials said in a statement issued by NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. "He wants to give both the Packers and Brett an appropriate amount of time to make decisions, including decisions impacting the team's roster and salary cap. When Brett is reinstated by the commissioner, we will announce it."

Farve isn't reinstated as an NFL player. He is still retired. He could still get cornered by the Packers with a poor contract, get paid off for not playing, or even be forced into an unacceptable trade and just stay retired. That is why the commissioner has no taken action yet.

If, as reported, Green Bay and Farve agree that he stays retired as a player but continues as part of the GB organization for 25 mill, does that not end this prediction?

If he agrees to stay retired, then I would interpret that as NO, he does not "come OUT of retirement TO PLAY" (as a player).
