Will DC comics kill off the Dark Knight in 'Batman R.I.P'?

Settled as No

Comic was released last week, and no available news about the death of Dark Knight.

Background:

Killing superheroes has always been a great publicity stunt for comic publishers, shocking the fans who are usually reconciled when the hero is resurrected mysteriously shortly afterwards. Marvel already pulled this stunt last year with Captain America, so DC comics, not to be outdone, have been teasing the comic fan community with rumors that Batman could have a very bleak future awaiting him in the aptly titled upcoming comic book 'Batman R.I.P.'. Then again, this could be a massive publicity stunt to boost sales and to get people interested in the Batman franchise in time for the latest Batman movie scheduled for release later this year.

So the question is - will DC actually go through with their threat and off the Dark Knight?

How will this question be resolved if Bruce Wayne lives but is either unable or unwilling to continue as Batman? He could live but his alter ego could be killed off. And if someone else becomes Batman, does that mean the answer is settled as no?

How about, we settle it as "Yes" if Bruce Wayne dies OR if Batman dies OR if Bruce is unwilling to continue as Batman and nobody else takes on the character.

IF someone else takes on the character of Batman, or if Bruce/Batman both survive then it is settled as "No".

Does that sound fair?

Indeed it does. Thank you for clarifying. That should prevent an Eliot Spitzer resignation kind of mess.

Jason Todd as Batman would be awesome, but Wayne doesn't approve of Todd's use of lethal force, so I think Todd is out. If anyone becomes Batman after Wayne it'd have to Grayson. A cool twist would be if it were Superman during Wayne's absense. It'd be a hoot seeing him trying to remember not to fly everywhere!

Hey, what if it were Alfred??? Ha!

But wait....what if Wayne/Batman does techinically die but they re-boot the universe and he comes back? Is that still settled as a "No" since he doesn't stay dead?

I hope that doesn't happen. DC has rebooted its universes often enough already. But if it does, I think it should be settled as yes. That would mean it's a different Batman because the world would be different.

As for Jason Todd, if Batman is dead, it wouldn't matter how he feels about the boy's methods. Unless Dick Grayson or Alfred or someone stopped him, he could take over no matter what Batman thought.

Wait, I take that back. In a rebooted universe, kryptic is right that the question should be settled as no. A different Batman because of that plot twist would be the same as a different character taking on the role of Batman.

It wouldn't even necessarily be a different Batman. These guys die all the time (Superman, Green Arrow, Jason Todd), then some "higher power" or New God or whoever intervenes. While there have been new people becoming the "old hero" (3 different boys being Robin), there is also the same people coming back to reclaim their own mantle. I'm betting this will be the case with Batman. Bruce Wayne is just as important as the Batman persona; remember Batman Beyond? Tell me it wasn't weird NOT having Wayne jumping rooftops and stuff...
