: Ceremonies should be fine for the market. If he attends the opening ceremony/ceremonies (same thing, just semantics) the market is settled as a yes.

"President Bush will attend the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Beijing, the White House said Thursday. The announcement quashed any talk of a presidential boycott over China's violent crackdown after anti-government riots and protests in Tibet."

: It's best we stick to our guns here. We've said many times that when something is announced that announcement can be used as settlement. In this case Bush has announced he will attend.

onedave: This article states that Bush will attend. However, the decision was not conditional on results of talks between China and the Dalai Lama. http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7011505213

WASHINGTON (AP) -- "It would be a 'cop-out' for countries to skip the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics as a way of protesting China's crackdown in Tibet, President Bush's national security adviser Hadley said Sunday. ...'We haven't worked out the details of his schedule at this point in time, but from his vantage point, if you listen to what he has said, he has no reason not to go,' Hadley said in broadcast interviews Sunday. 'Because what he has said is we need to be using diplomacy.' "
Oh dear, Bush's style of diplomacy leaves a lot to be desired.. But it sounds loike he'll appear.
Oh, and Clinton did not go on to the convention...despite what she said she was doing. :)

Ryan
