Will the American Federal Government establish funding to protect pets left behind in all foreclosed homes?

Settled as No

Today on the CBS Sunday morning show, Ben Stein brought up a good point- the government is bailing out (with a lot of our tax money) the banks, mortgage companies, over-extended home buyers, and "flip it" market players. But the most innocent victims in all this mess are the pets left behind, often in locked and abandoned homes. He challenges us to ask our lawmakers to also send some of our bucks to shelters, adoptive new owners, or local governments to ease this small part of the big problem. Will the Federal gov't. help before this autumn (Oct. 1st)?

I have flagged my own question to have my settlement error fixed. I say "by autumn" and I meant this coming one, not 2010! (Geesh, and I edited my question 5 times!)

Why the low percentage? No faith in the government?

Chuckle snort- no faith in the government at all! Yet I am torn- we need to be protecting people and "real" things, and the amount of $ we spend on our critters is an embarrassment... But since we ARE willing to bail out the pitbulls in the stock market, than we should do more for the real dogs (and cats). As to the date, I like October 1, for no special reason..

Even as a pet owner (check out Skipper's avatar http://www.hubdub.com/e/User/_916) I have to say I hope this doesn't happen ... we need less government in the US and more personal responsibility. I don't think the government should be bailing _anyone_ out in the sub-prime mess. Those who purchased homes beyond their means with low, but adjustable, rate mortgages should have known better. And the investment bankers (like those at BSC) that packaged and traded in all the slimy derivative sub-prime mortgage products should have known better too. Caveat Emptor.

I agree with your point in principle, but since the prime slime are getting help, why shouldn't the pets? I was surprised and interested in Stein's idea, as he seems to be a "less gov't" guy, too..

I believe Stein had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek when he was making these comments. Making a point similar to anaverageamerican's in #5
