We are currently looking into rules around future questions concerning eBay auctions. We'll be in touch soon.

Background:

The US is attempting to destroy the dead spy satellite to prevent, "pieces showing up on Ebay". Will anyone claim to have pieces up for auction before the end of the month?

An Average American, this seems to be a bug ... intermittent. I had a similar problem a day or so ago, and sent an email to get the date established. I made a report of it here:

You better not! Pull a stunt like that and you might _need_ your old laptop.

Ok... how is this fair???

I placed a rather large amount of my H$ on this question; 'based on the question' not based on the HubDub admin posting that it'll be an article in the newspaper.

Does this mean we no longer bet our H$ on the question or do we bet it on the possible change of rules / conditions?

I bet 'Yes' pending some moron actually posting it on eBay as an advertising prank etc... which is still a chance but to have that same prank appear in a major publication is very unlikely (IMHO).

So where do I stand... am I going to be "Hubankrupt"???

:(

I have not staked anything on this question, but if an auction claims to be selling a piece of the sattelite then thats it. Why in the HELL would a freaking news source report on that. Thats not the question here. AND YES a HUBDUBBER COULD INFLUENCE THE OUTCOME, SO WHAT?

  13 scott
Even in the description is says this "The US is attempting to destroy the dead spy satellite to prevent, "pieces showing up on Ebay". Will anyone claim to have pieces up for auction before the end of the month? "

That says NOTHING about being reported in the news.

Sure anyone can make an auction right now and win the bet... that's why I bet so much on it.

Since the decision was made to make it a news story the odds have swung against those of us who bet yes so badly that the question should be voided.
posted 39 weeks ago
Scott - slummymummy did post that issue on the GetSatisfaction forum board here:
<http://getsatisfaction.com/hubdub/topics/escalation_got_some_rock_to_sell_on_ebay#full_conversation>

Nigel Eccles (Official Rep) responded by stating:
"I will revert to the original definition however if the eBay submission looks suspicious I think we have to be open to voiding the question..."

The Settlement Details were, according, modified (at 2:29pm PST) -- so settlement of this will not need to be based on reports in a recognised news source (in comment #9) above, and will settle as the question was originally asked (unless obviously faked).

Thanks to slummymummy for the post!

Not impressed that since I have posted the request for settlement the people I know are still bidding on this and getting far better odds than me who 'rode this one' from the early days!
All bets after 'settlement request' should be void... is that correct???

I find this very funny...
I requested the settlement of this question... I wanted it settled because I found the eBay link(s) and reported it immediately.

Here are your "fake" links... go on... I bet you they trace-route to legit eBay sites! ;)

Looks like I'm not that bad at betting on human stupidity after all... some moron was ALWAYS gonna claim they found some space junk and try to sell it on the worlds largest online market... I just assumed it'd be a terrorist organisation!

Now... lets get back to proving the link is fake? rohan?

Yes rohan... I agree with you... the seller's ability to speak / write in English is very suspicious. Hahahahahahhahaha
Is that maybe because they are GERMAN?

I didn't need to translate the text to English because it's in the Ad!
Have you really read it?

So now your theory is that we shouldn't get paid out because the English written in the ad wasn't good enough?

I'm gonna start a question: "Will somebody sell a Rolex on eBay before March 30th?"
I'm then gonna bet whatever money I have on "No" and when I lose I'll say they are all fakes and I should get my money back.

If you want suspicious check out the eBay ads where they are tryin to sell a hat with a Spy Satellite Early Warning System in it for a couple of $

I don't know why anyone would assume the pieces of the spy sat would all land in english speaking countries.

What makes you think that my opinion is based on the language? I said translate it SO THAT you could understand what was being said. I quote:

From the English part:

1.“Probably a part of the spy satellite “USA 193” was found and is now for sale on ebay!”

2.“But unfortunately we can´t take any responsibility for the correctness of those information.”

3.“The heavly spoiled and carbonized piece has been found and it´s inexplicable how it came there\”

From a translation by Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/)

1.“We cannot take over however the guarantee for the fact that it actually concerns thereby the questionable satellite the "USA 193" or a part of its”

2.“The strongly charred object was found anyhow, whereby remains unclear, how it arrived at property. We take over therefore no warranty concerning the authenticity of the article. Back completion of the business is impossible. We insure hereby only that it concerns a strongly charred object. Origin unknown.”

News stories:

1.“Most of the pieces fell through the atmosphere and burned up within a couple of days of the intercept. As of Tuesday, the Air Force Space Command was reportedly tracking 17 fragments that were still in orbit.”

(from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23372844/ )

2. Military officials are tracking fewer than 3,000 pieces of debris and all are smaller than a football, [while the object in concern looks as big (and suspiciously like) a car]

(from http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206900024&subSection=News )

Settlement rules:
“After discussion on Get Satisfaction we will revert back to the original settlement criteria however we will void if the eBay listing looks suspicious...”

-From Nigel

I think that what I have said and shown in the links clearly shows that this is suspicious. How you people infer that I said what I did on the basis of the language and/or nationality of the seller remains unclear to me.

posted 39 weeks ago
  29 scott
Doesnt matter HOW suspicious it is. The question clearly states that " Will anyone claim to have pieces up for auction before the end of the month? "

This is answered in the affirmative. You cannot disagree with that. There can be fake pieces all over ebay and yet that means the question is answered in the favor of those who bet there would be some on ebay.
posted 39 weeks ago
You cannot disagree with that.

The eBay seller, in his/her own words doesn't claim the object is part of the, so called, spy satellite.

Rather the claim is that this is "Probably a part of the spy satellite “USA 193” ... " and "probably came down in Germany." [emphasis added]

The seller further disclaims the object by stating " ... unfortunately we can´t take any responsibility for the correctness of those information."

If a different object was used, say a diamond was offered on eBay, and the accompanying text said "this is probably a diamond" but "unfortunately we can´t take any responsibility for the correctness of this information", I don't think it would be considered to be a diamond.

In my view, if an auction said "this is a fragment of the "spy satellite", that would be a "Yes". Stating that "this is probably a fragment ..." is not a claim that it is a fragment. Adding a disclaimer that "we cannot take any responsibility for the accuracy ..." further reinforces what this is, and what it isn't, as it disclaims the object being auctioned.

[I don't have any H$ in this market.]

How can ANYONE know it's a verifiable part of the sat? There is no way. The guy is honest - he thinks its part and he's selling it. Thats all we need.

" Will anyone claim to have pieces up for auction before the end of the month? "

Operative word: CLAIM

I have a bridge that I can sell you.

I just claimed to be able to sell you a bridge.

What bridge? Dunno. It's not a real bridge. But I did definitely claim to have a bridge.

Get it?

"Will there be an Ebay auction claiming to offer a piece, or pieces, of the dead spy satelitte on or before February 29, 2008 PST?"

Yes, there are auctions CLAIMING to offer pieces of the satellite. You've all posted links as proofs of these CLAIMS. So, where is the confusion?

This should be settled as YES.

Scott -- How can ANYONE know it's a verifiable part of the sat? There is no way.

There are many resources available to verify even a very small fragment ... from the background I've read. While the dimensions of the object aren't listed in the auction description, it certainly appears large enough to verify (especially the nice, shiny parts ;-)

Steph -- sure, I get the sentiment of what you're saying. (I do :)
In my view, "claim" is to assert a fact ... even if that fact is not true.

This eBay seller asserted a "maybe" ... by claiming this is "Probably a part of the spy satellite ..."

As I said in #30 <-- good grief! ... if the seller had said, "this is a fragment of the "spy satellite", that would be a "Yes". Even if it wasn't.
posted 39 weeks ago

If th original settlement rules were completely abided to, then it would be "YES". Because the settlement rules were changed, it has to be "NO"
posted 39 weeks ago
  38 rohan
CLAIM: to assert or maintain as a fact: "She claimed that he was telling the truth".

"Probably" doesn't not count as a "claim", so all other debate is redundant.

MY GOD. This is the question.

Will there be an Ebay auction claiming to offer a piece, or pieces, of the dead spy satelitte on or before February 29, 2008 PST?

How can it be other than YES. If there is an auction selling a piece of the satilite that how can it not be a CLAIM? It's not an auction to NOT sell a piece of the sat.

"It's not an auction to NOT sell a piece of the sat." - WOW. Thanks for informing me, you must be a genius.

It is an auction to sell a piece of metal which MAY be a piece of the satellite, and "claim" refers to an assertion of a fact. Therefore, to "probably" have a piece of the satellite is not the same as actually having the satellite.

As Brutus said in response to Caesar,
"That every like is not the same, O Caesar,
The heart of Brutus earns to think upon. "
