Option to bet against a choice

Let's say, there is a multiple choice question, answers
A, B, C, D, ETC.
If you don't think A will win, you can bet appropriately B, C, D, ETC. with probabilities, based on how they are already running that is equivalent to NOT A. But this takes a lot of effort, and it seems like a nice addition to HubDub to make this opportunity available. It is a simple calculation and would be a nice feature that people who vote on multiple choice questions (which they all basically are - YEs, No is two) would like.. Thoughts?

PS.. No=bet proportional to Pi, where i .ne. to the No choice you want to bet against..

I do some betting on intrade, which allows you to either buy an option or short sell an option. While I'd like that option here sometimes, it really exists anyways since you can always bet on B, C, and D if you're sure it won't be A. I think the same arguments against it that work against the idea of short selling in the stock market. It can sometimes artificially depress a market's value. If one person with really deep pockets went into a market they could dump thousands agaisnt something despite a poorer majority seeing option A as the best option. Sure, that happens to some extent now, but it might become amplified.

I agree bigken. If it's a market with 3 options, it's no big deal. But if I want to bet against something in a market with more choices, I'll skip it because it's too tedious to bet everything else. OTOH, it may be good for newbies who don't mind.

I was just thinking about this too! Like for a question regarding American Idol or DWTS, whether the question is will be kicked off or who will receive the most votes, I would like the short option as well! Takes too long and it's too bothersome to select every choice except the one you want shorted!

Thanks folks, glad to hear more thinking like me. I would check myself in, if i were you guys..
I didn't realize that this is the same as "short selling". Never exactly knew that was just "opposite selling". In game theory, there is a play
call misere play, which may amount to the same thing -- playing to lose...but again, i have never played it.. (just know about it)..

Short selling has definitely been discussed before. I believe the official response is a 'no' at this stage - if you're curious you can try finding the previous discussion online

I was wondering if this has been discussed any more among the "big wigs". I couldn't find the other thread you were referring to. This has been something I've thought would be pretty nice to have. Currently, if a market has 7 options and I want to wager against the majority I can put a thousand on each of the other 6 options, but every option that I put money on is dropping my networth as well making a cash-out position that much harder to attain. A short sell would only require one wager and would be very simple to cash out.

How closely does admin look at suggestions here? There are a few that would be very nice to have but don't seem to get much in response. Watching a question would be another nice option to have on the site. Are changes just too difficult to implement at this point in the site?
