Question Creator's Strike

i dont have 50 questions suspended LOL but once that discrepancy is fixed, the stats will be great.

I noticed the stats now reflect more accurate percentages. Thanks for fixing this!

When I first saw this forum page I was in favor of a monetary compensation system for question creators. Now after reading all 8 pages here and also another forum question on the same topic (http://www.hubdub.com/e/Topic/Reward_question_writers_with_a__of_the_cash_their_markets_generate_454) I realize that there may not be any system that will fairly compensate the truly deserving creators.

The best alternative appears to be a recognition system that has just arrived after a looooong wait. I know that with the amount of work that has gone into this new system you won't like my suggestion to change it but I hope that you will at least make an addition to it.

Let me start by saying that I believe that with just a few hours per day I could probably create 100 - 200 questions per month. They wouldn't be well thought out and may not be all that interesting but I would follow the rules so they wouldn't be voided. They would get a few wagers and float around in Hubdubland for weeks or months until they settle. By the end of the summer my page would would look like this
Created 1000
Front page 10 (1%) If I am lucky.
Settled 990 (99%)
Voided 10 (1%) I would probably make a few mistakes along the line.

Anyone seeing this would think that I was a great question writer and a valued asset to the community. I submit that I would be neither. It would be like the basketball player who averages 20 points per game. If he takes 50 shots per game and only makes 10 (20%) he is actually hurting his team.

My suggestion is to rate people on the quality of their questions not just on the number of questions that they create. I believe the best way to do this is to rate questions by the number of unique Hubdub members that make predictions on a question. To me this seems to be a better way to guage user interest in a question than to use money wagered or number of wagers because these can be unfairly influenced by 1 person who makes a large wager or multiple wagers.

Hopefully your system will allow you to determine the number of unique members to make a prediction on each question. Add this number together for each question that makes it to settlement. Divide this total by the number of questions settled and you get the average number of unique predictors per settled question. The higher the number the more interesting, or enjoyable etc. the members questions are to the Hubdub community. This could be carried out to 2 or 3 decimal places and used to create a question creators leader board to recognize Hubdubs best question writers. You may want to require a certain minimum number of settled questions (50 or 100?) to keep the list manageable and more statistically valid. The present system only allows one to see this question information on a persons profile page. My system has it on a leaderboard for everyone to see and compare.

Lastly I want to give credit to tisha. To arrive at my suggestion I combined 3 points that she made in post #17 to this question 18 weeks ago. She asked for input on her post. Sorry it took so long but I wasn't even a member back then.

As a UK based Hubdub addict (yes, I watch click too) I enjoy the challenge of creating a good question even more than my feeble attempts at predicting results. The new 'question creator stats' are great but I would like to see more done to encourage the creation of quality questions. I like Charlesf's suggestion and it avoids the problems associated with $H payment but as it's percentage based someone creating one question could have a higher score than someone creating fifty. This suggestion would work well as a simple count of unique user predictions with a penalty point deduction system based on voids/stealing to help maintain quality.

Hmm, is Hubdub addiction to be encouraged? ("Are you still playing on _that_ web site? I suppose it's better than Facebook.")

Leaving such rhetorical questions aside, I see the merits of @Charlesf 's suggestion (esp. the point about unique predictors) and note to cfcm77 that a lower 'entry' limit of 50-100 questions was mentioned. Sadly, I still see problems - because frankly there are different kind of questions, depending on category and type. Some qs can be repeated - a daily Dow up or down; others are long term; some will relate to a hotly contested sports match; others will pick up interest - Swine flu. While repetitive questions would quickly propel you up this new leaderboard, imho it is precisely the quirky and the timely which deserve recognition.

I'm not sure what the rules are for 'front page' status, but that was a method to 'star' questions. My proposal - not thought out - is that there should be a leaderboard for questions, not by player. Most unique predictors would be a good measure, and there could be one for 'active' questions, and one for q's settled in say the past 3 months for historical comparison. This would reward both 'long lived' qs (on the active board) and 'high interest' questions. This would also spur writers to get their friends in for a bet.
