In Australian Rules each team consists of eighteen players with four substitutes. The subsitutes can come on and off at any time throughout the match. There are three central or field umpires, who control of the game.



Each game consists of 4 quarters of 20 minutes each. Game length used to be 4 quarters of 25 minutes, but was changed in 1994 to 20 minutes, with the allowance for additional time-on when the ball goes out-of-bounds.



The playing area is oval shaped. With dimensions between 135 and 185 metres in length and 110 and 155 metres in width.



The object of the game is to outscore the opposition. In the league the winning team is awarded four points the losers zero and two points each for a draw.



A goal is scored when a player kicks the ball between the two tallest upright posts. Six points is given for a goal. If the ball passes either side of the tall posts, it is called a behind and the team scores one point.



The game commences with the umpire bouncing the ball in the centre of the pitch. The players then try to move the ball towards their goals by either handpassing, which is holding the ball in one hand and punching it with the other hand, or kicking it.



If a player kicks the ball and another player, either his teammate or the opposition catches it (called a mark) then that player can stop play without fear of being tackled by the opposition.



When a player has the ball he is able to run with the ball but must bounce the ball on the ground a least once every ten metres. When a team has the ball within reach of goal, usually 50 metres and closer, they then try to kick a goal.



When a foul is committed a free kick is awarded to the opposition team. They are then given the ball to start the game from wherever the foul was committed.



Here is a list of reasons for a free-kicks to be awarded.



1. Pushing an opponent in the back.
2. Tackling an opponent around the neck.
3. Throwing the ball.
4. Being tackled fairly by your opponent and then dropping the ball.
5. Being tackled by your opponent when you don't have the ball.
6. Kicking the ball out of bounds on the full.
7. Running with the ball for more than 10 metres without bouncing it on the ground.

I am a Steelers fan. I feel sorry for you Bears fans, they seemed to do nothing in offseason to help. How many fantasy leagues are you in, do you play for free or do you play in pay leagues? I played in 10 fantasy leagues last year, 4 of them were pay leagues.

Well Rob won't allow two identical questions with suspend times 15 minutes apart, so the questions have indeed been "hijacked". That said, I didn't really mean it negatively. I was just trying to comment that I thought they should suspend separately and not all at the same time. (Another conversation that would go better over coffee than shout pages)

The 10's digit question is not a lottery. If you follow the market closely, you can start making pretty good predictions on where it is going to go in the last 10-20 minutes. Its quite fun actually - you should try it.

If you hijack the index questions another time, they really shouldn't all suspend at the same time. I'd like to see them close by degree of prediction difficulty:
Close Up or Down maybe an hour before
Amount changed and 100's digit about 30 minutes
10s digit right up to the close

Its nearly impossible to expect someone to predict the 10s digit of the DOW 30 minutes out.

I agree. The current format is a free for all at the bell. If you are lucky enough to get through you can win. My friend kelly had moved his close of the "DJIA at 1;00" to 20 minutes before the close and if you look at the results you will see that the spike is not as drastic. Now it gets into predicting vs who has the quickest hand. Had told Jenni that I was moving the closes back. If you want them at 30 before just let me know.

I stumbled across this just now, I'm assuming this is not news to you... but just in case... Steven Spielberg's youngest child is named Destry Allyn.

Well I got all games scheduled through Friday. I will let them sit a day to see if anyone raises any issues with them. I checked records(home and away) and scheduled pitchers for each game to try and adjust initial odds properly. But it is a single baseball game, anyone can win on any given day so its hard to put any team a 70-75% or higher initial favorite.
Let me know if you notice any changes that can be made for next group of questions.

I got back home during 4th quarter and was able to squeeze in a few bets on Game 2. I like your series of questions who will be leading after each quarter. I didnt see them posted when I left. Its cool that the questions pertaining to the NBA Finals are spread out so multiple people are asking instead of one or two taking up all the questions. I ask my few usually right after a game ends for the next game, and wait a day or two to see what others asked. If anything seems left out I was going to create new Q's, but the great hubdub question creators always fill in the blanks.

Wow! So you WERE named after the movie, etc. I think that is really cool, and DESTRY is a great story. While you might be tired of it, I think you are lucky...!

And I think your sister lucked out as well: your parents picked really cool names for both of you. I am named for my great-grandfather and there are two more Johns in-between. That puts a "number" behind my name on legal documents, and that is about the most boring thing out...

But have you SEEN or HEARD the broadway musical version of Destry? It's VERY entertaing: one of my favorite broadway shows...I recently found it reissued on CD!

Maybe we have a new phrase for the hubdub limited Oxford:

A "PARKING PLACE" is an 85/15 prediction with low risk low yield, ideal for parking large sums of extra cash.

Ok destry, I can go along with what you are saying. But what about THIS PARTICULAR QUESTION concerning Obama and Bloomberg?

If the odds are reasonably fair but lousy for betting, and no one in their right mind is going to waste hubdub dollars on it (unless they have nothing else to do with their cash), what is the point of this prediction question?

At best the hubdub "top ten" could be parking extra cash here for a safe low risk low yield bet, and almost no one else is going to touch it. There is no prediction "vote" here. The only possible vote that is taking place is that the "big guns" are stating that they are absolutely certain that this is correct enough to be parking big cash at low risk low yield.

Destry, as one of the more entrepreneurial of the "top ten", what do you think? I value your opinion and always read it carefully...
