Hey Ryan,

A pair of pigeons laid a couple eggs on my second story back porch, right up against the window of my sliding glass door. I first noticed the eggs yesterday. The brooding mother lets me approach her as long as I don't open the door, and I took pictures of the her on the eggs and also photos of just the eggs and the nest. I searched for the incubation period of pigeon eggs online and found a wide variety of answers ranging from 17 - 22 days.

Would it be ok for me to create a question in your general category: When will the pigeon eggs on my back porch hatch? I would set the odds based on the 17-22 days and include the option The eggs don't hatch for any reason.

Since the settlement source would be my word and pictures, I would refrain from betting on the question, and I would set the suspend date on the 15th day so that no one could claim that I tipped off any bettors on the day they hatched.

Here's some pictures someone posted of pigeons laying eggs on their back balcony, and based on the timestamps it took 21 days for these eggs to hatch:

Hi Ryan,

There's no provision in the options for "other" or "no report by suspend date". The "lady" is definitely going to get taxed by the IRS, the only question is "how much". One solution would be to void the question if no information is available, especially as her tax is not likely to become public knowledge (unless she makes an issue of it). Presuming that she will not be taxed because nothing has been reported in the press is not correct. It won't happen that way with the American IRS, and I doubt that could happen in Great Britain either. My suggestion is that a void would be fairest, considering no information has been made available and is not likely to be available at all. Many Thanks! John

I once, in the old days, did a "DOS purge *.*" of my whole computer, when i thought i was in a subdirectory, instead of my main C drive. So, I know what a simple click of a button can do.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear, someday, of people dying due to this kind of effect. In fact, many years ago, there was this Korean flight that was shot down by the Russians, because it strayed over their territory, and I wonder whether it went over their territory because if mis-heading set into their computer navigator... (the only other reason, of course, is that it was secretly spying, which is what the Russians thought -- don't think the likes of us will ever know).

It is difficult to word/settle questions that involve such matters. I have seen other questions of this type. For example, there was one about sneakers with feet, i think, floating up into canada, or some such thing....Well, either they do, or do not, but I think that one had a non-event indicating a negative result..(no-report = event did not occur).. So, such things are difficult to interpret, but we all learn from these difficult situations.

My upside down skier photographer question could be better worded. I saw how you answered the fired-by-suspension question. Can we change that to say he gets fired by suspension specifically for taking these photos as opposed to just he gets fired & then move the suspension date to the same time on Friday the 16th giving him until the end of the week?

So it is now a new hubdub rule, that we can consult a question creator AFTER THE EVENT and AFTER THE QUESTION IS SETTLED to ask him what he really meant? Even though the question is written in plain English? Hubdubbers have to decide whether or not to bid on a prediction based on what is written in plain English. My question was in sufficiently plain English that you took the time to contact the author to find out what he meant...Isn't it a little bit late and little bit arbitrary to settle a question in this manner?

Where in the quesion does it say earlier storms? It clearly says the November 30th date in the question. IMHO, a better choice would have been to double-settle as 0 or 1, since the author NOW says that it included earlier storms. I am very disappointed...

Hey ryan - thanks, I obviously had my sunday brain on yday, made a mistake in nearly every question created! Weird thing is I thought i set suspend date to feb 09 - but it came up as feb 08 ... usually it doesn't let u set a suspend date that is in the past. Weird. Anyhoo I've fixed it now :-)

Regarding the Perfect Storm question:
I think it probably should be voided too. I was originally under the impression that Gov. Schwarzenegger was giving daily updates that would appear on the noon news in southern California. If that is not the case, as we'll find out today, then the question should be voided.

Ryan - clearly the economic growth questions were prescient in the light of current events. I do think that we should look carefully at the close dates because I haven't checked properly when the data is released.

tell me whats the point of this. whenever i make a question there is always one of three persons that go out of there way to to first get it suspended then get it voided it is a vendetta i created the last on the hurricane altered it then that was voided.i asked for the first to be deleted myself as it was jumped on 20,000 hit immediately.it struck me as strange so i repeated it to not include Florida the one below.

No problem with the hurricane thing. That's the way it goes sometimes... With regard to dry land, that is another.. I think people just try come up with a colorful wording.... I do not know what landfall means. Since there are a lot of hurricane questions, it might be nice to have a clearcut definition, of where the hurricane is "hitting". The eyewall or eye, are the most precisely defined part of the hurricane. The "hit dry land" implies that rain from the hurricane is falling on a location.. this is a lot wider swath, and not well defined, and then hit dry land, would mean the first place to experience rain from the hurricane... so there are at least a couple of choices there...

What i try to do is to stay away from questions that are ambiguous, cause I generally lose lots of H$ when I don't , as in these hurricane questions now... so that is just what i try and practice..

The earlier info, dealing with the plates, and how the caribbean sea is defined (in terms of plates) makes some sense geologically.


From a tourism perspective, it may be better for the bureau you site, for the islands to list them as part of the caribbean rather than the atlantic...(since the former is warm and the latter is cold).

In any case, I am minimizing some of my losses, and the hurricane has not arrived, nor do we know what hits dry land means.. I hope we can find out from some reputable source like the tourism site... :)

Another thing, questions that should have been simple to answer have been sitting untouched for weeks such as "Will annhuaser bush still be independent or owned by InBev". InBev bought them up so that question should be solved. And "Will Russia control Abkhazia by the end of august." Russia's had control for a while and that question should have been answered. Speed seems to be declining rapidly on the answering of questions.

I see the problem of a number of questions being written as
price or number between say
10-19
20-29, etc.

yet the numbers are not integers, so there is a good chance the answer will be 19.5 or some such number between 19 and 20, not covered by the answers. I guess this must have come up before, but it is not clear to the person betting.. maybe there needs to be some sort of generic answer..

well, sorry for bothering you about this. I just see it as a problem...

2) also i am wondering about concocting a methodology to help avoid users cheating or gaming, or whatever, by arranging how the money is distributed... (and also would avoid all the work for the hubdub staff), by inventing a better system for how the funds are awarded and how the % are set.. can you let me know(or tell me who to contact )how the money/percentages are set? and where the money comes from? (like if a person makes a million dollars, does this mean they have beaten 1000 people out of 1000$? or what?
