I've been to the Smithsonian Museum of Native American history, and to hear the government tell the story we saved the savage ones and their pathetic ways from extinction! I think me and my people are going to have to assume there will never be a formal apology, and to be frank i don't need some guy that wasn't even alive back then giving me some half assed insincere apology anyways.

It would be nice if certain activists would stop making schools change their mascots to more PC things though...

Although I am tempted to feel somewhat proud that my government has acknowledged it's wrongdoing of the past I think it is important to recognize that the some of the diddlers, torturers and murderers of native N. American children still live without any apparent threat to their freedom or incentive to take responsibilities for the horrors attributed to them. I have reason to suspect only a very small portion of these atrocities have ever come to light. My opinion is such that any apology is worthless without any attempt to investigate these crimes.

It was over a hundred years ago, and there are more than enough books filled withed the vilest offenses known to man. Leave it be already.

ironman288, I'm just curios, what kind of offenses do you mean?

The Canadian governments recent appology is in regards to crimes in which the perpetrators are still alive.

I think we let people change what words mean. The word 'torture' is one of those words... it doesn't mean making people feel uncomfortable or embarassed! (I'm thinking about what "news" reporters ask us to try to get excited about in Abu Garab, or Guantanamo)

For instance, check out this video of what happened to an american citizen who decided to live in the USSR:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_60B0xgGvZQ

While history shows that there were times that the Native Americans were not treated fairly, it went both ways, and they are lucky that in their case they were dealing with the United States government, instead of China, the USSR, Iran, North Korea, or the "Palistinians".

So, my point is that words do mean things, and we shouldn't cheapen them by changing their meaning for political or social purposes. There is no reason that President Bush should apologize for anything, when living conditions now are better than anyone's wildest imagination could have conjured before the Mayflower.

What did President Bush do to them? We have done more then enough for them. It is time we stop wasting our money to bribe them.
