Settled as Neither McCain and Obama attend
I posed this idea in a comment to another question. With Helms being such a polarizing person, known as Senator No, will it be politically a wise move to attend the service. I don't really expect Obama to do so, but what about McCain? He needs his conservative base in NC to support him strongly and not attending the service of a man he served in the Senate with would send a bad message to those voters and others on the right who doubt McCain's conservative credentials. But it also reminds other voters of Helms controversial stands on positions and how he led the right wingers. Might put off other more moderate voters and remind them of the past.
Of course, it might not be a bad idea for Obama to show up...he needs NC votes too!
To count as attending, they must be seated in the church during the funeral service.
