May the drunk ref whistle again?

Settled as No

Fifa referee Sergei Schmolik was escorted off the field and taken to the hospital for tests because it seemed like his back was hurting him. It wasn’t. His strange refereeing style may have had something to do with the fact that he instead tested for high levels of alcohol in his system.

A BAC of 0.26 per cent.

Sergei Schmolik has refereed neary 250 football matches and last year, was voted his country's top referee.

The Belarus football federation said Shmolik's case will be subject to a disciplinary committee. At the moment Shmolik is suspended from his refereeing duties.

Will the disciplinary committee decide that Shmolik may be the referee in a football match again after this?

How did they let him start the match in the first place, especially when the refs probably share a dressing room! He refereed the whole first half in that state!

What's not to say the other refs just hold their liquor better? I am of the opinion that most professional sports officials are highly intoxicated while at work.

Abso -@#$%- lutely! And, why not? If, indeed he is competent in that state - as votes for best-in-country would appear to indicate - I do not see the harm. He's not operating a motor vehicle endangering others. The next - and maybe only other - concern I can think of is "Would his judgement be impaired?" which apparently it was not significantly or he wouldn't have made "best" referee.

Harry Caray did the city of Chicago proud as a baseball broadcaster who was occasionally seriously intoxicated on the air. I know Schmolik's role is more important than that of a broadcaster, and his mistakes would be magnified by this but I think we can all think of a time when a ref that ruined a game with a bad call was stone sober.

I'm sure I'll be in the minority on this opinion, but I say judge him by his calls not his BAC.

J'agree! If he's good enough drunk, he'll no doubt be better sober, right?
That doesn't go for darts and pool though...
Oh, and if you think someone is hot on a night out...

Does this include games in all leagues? I not that clued up on how football in the country works.

Belarus football federation has called for the disciplinary committee.
I assume they will decide as far as their powers reach: Covering all matches organized by the Belarus football federation.

He's got to have some excuse or way to plead this thing down. Maybe I'm just too used to the way things work in the U.S.
