OTTAWA —" A highly anticipated decision from the European Commission on legislation that aims to ban the import of seal products has been postponed until at least next week.
"Roy Christensen, a spokesman for the Ottawa-based Delegation of the European Commission in Canada, says discussion of the legislation has been delayed until July 23.
"The proposal to ban seal products has not been made public, but the European Union's environment commissioner has indicated it will focus on prohibiting products from seals that have been killed inhumanely.
"Any legislation would have to be unanimously approved by the EU's 27 commissioners.
...
"Canada's commercial seal hunters say there should be no ban because the hunt is sustainable and humane, but animal welfare groups vehemently dispute that."
