DJIA - What will be the dollar (point) difference between open and close July 18, 2008?

Hi guys, I settled this market as a difference of 60 = open:11,436.56 - close:11,496.57 but google finance shows the difference as +49.91. Can anyone shed some light - has this market been settled incorrectly?

All the "Dow Closed up 50 points" that is listed on yahoo, google, CNN, tv, everywhere.. is from previous close. This question asks about open to close instead. DOW usually opens pretty close to the previous close, so there isn't typically much of a difference. Yesterday, the DOW opened almost 10 points down (WOW). That accounts for the difference in the numbers. Close to Close was up 50 points, Open to close was up 60 points.

The other "Will DOW close up" market is from the previous close, not the open. I suggested at one time to make this question close to close as well to bring it inline with all the major news reporting. It doesn't change the game play any and makes settlement easier... BUT no one seemed to agree with me ;(

I am in this market, but NOT in the 0=50 range. ouch!
However, MSNBC and FoxBusiness (3hours after the market closed), were still displaying the number +49.91. ( So, I thought I had missed some good wins because of a .10 difference ).

The above news links all point to a 49.91 gain.

So, looks like hubdub will take those $H back.

Ahhhh, I see what jenniandboys is saying, and under that definition, I think the market WAS settled correctly. (and btw, I like jenni's idea of 'close to close' better. ;)

Hey guys, thanks for clearing that up. Something to think about for the rules I think, it's slightly unclear for users at the moment.

Can someone help me understand this? I'm still not getting it. Here's the numbers I'm coming up with. They indicate the difference in open and close was less than 6 points and the difference in close to close was 49.91 - both less than 50. Either way, shouldn't this market have been settled as under 50?

Open: 11,491.20
Prev. Close: 11,446.66
Difference between 07/17/08 close and 07/18/08 close: +49.91
Difference between 07/17/08 close and 07/18/08 open: +44.54
Difference between 07/18/08 open and 07/18/08 close: + 5.37

My disconnect seems to be in the open figure of 11,436.56. The site I track this on (http://money.cnn.com/data/markets/dow/), shows the opening price of 11,491.20 but a couple others I've checked show the 11,436.56. I'm confused about the difference between the numbers but atleast I understand the math.

Does anyone know the basis for those two numbers (11,436.56 and 11,491.20)?
