Which Commercial Will Win the 2008 Commercial Emmy?

Background: The Emmy awards are just days away! Although most Emmy categories require watching an entire season of mediocre TV to accurately predict a winner, this one can be determined in only 5 minutes! With the advent of the DVR, commercials are getting less and less attention, but some of them are worth the effort. Giant pigeons, excessive cursing and a wedding... what more could you ask for? Watch the ads below and then pick your winner.

The winner will be announced on Sept. 13 at the 60th Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Last year's Emmy for Outstanding Commercial went to American Express for its "Animals" spot by Ogilvy & Mather, New York, starring Ellen DeGeneres.

The five nominees are:

Coca-Cola's "It's Mine"
a 60-second spot directed by Nicolai Fuglsig of MJZ, made its debut on the Super Bowl this year and features parade balloons, *Family Guy's* Stewie and Underdog, that take flight to chase a Coca-Cola bottle balloon.

The Hallmark commercial, "Brother of the Bride"
a two-minute spot directed by Joe Pytka, follows the brother of a bride as he puts his foot in his mouth each time he speaks to a guest at the wedding reception.

The FedEx spot, "Carrier Pigeons"
broke on the Super Bowl this year. Directed by Tom Kunz of MJZ, the 45-second commercial shows what happens when an office worker decides to use carrier pigeons to service his shipping needs.

The Travelers commercial, "Delivery", a 60-second spot directed by Rupert Samuel of MJZ, stars an insurance representative who travels with a giant red umbrella and rescues people in need ...

Bud Light's, "Swear Jar", a 60-second commercial directed by David Shane through Hungry Man, shows what happens to an office when a swear jar is introduced...

Settlement details:As announced by The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles and confirmed by a major mainstream news source.

Yeah, brilliant question. Coke's made me smile, Bud's made me laugh out loud a few times and was my out and out favourite. Pigeon one ok. I thought the other two were pretty lame.

Bud: I cant help it.... I love this commercial and get such a kick out of it...miss the other funny ones they used to have with the frogs etc. great question with great videos

I think there's a "sleeper" within these videos that may likely win (with an opportunity for serious H$ as well) -- but first, some thoughts on the Coca-Cola commercial ;-)

No stranger to exceedingly high production values, Coca-Cola certainly has the budget to maintain those high production values... and this commercial is no exception!

Like others have commented, 'this commercial made me smile' .. but "why"?

After watching the commercial, I was happy that Charlie Brown "won" the Coke. What ran through my mind was all those many years when Lucy would promise, and promise, and promise not to pull the football away when Charlie Brown went to kick it, and every time when Charlie Brown went to kick the football, Lucy would move it :-(

So I was happy to see Charlie Brown win!

Then, after watching it a couple more times, I *noticed* the scene -- lasting only a couple of seconds -- that appeared just before Charlie Brown "secured" the bottle of Coke.

Who's in charge of what I think and feel? ;-)

I am not really sure what you mean. Especially at that second to last paragraph. And the 4th one. And that first paragraph as well. Could you explain that a little better for us lower folks?
posted 43 weeks ago
@ dragonfangxl -- it isn't the first time someone didn't understand what I wrote/said ;-) (and I really appreciate your asking!)

The first paragraph is teasing/suggesting that there's a commercial, yet "un-commented about" by me, that I think might be the winner... but I wanted to give my cent-cent thoughts on the Coca-Cola commercial first.

The fourth paragraph depends on folks knowing the "history" of Charlie Brown and Lucy's relationship -- especially as it relates to the "football trick" that lasted for years. The quickest (shortest) and perhaps clearest read on it is found in good 'ole Wikipedia, under "History": <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_van_Pelt>

Once you read that, the "second to last paragraph" may make sense to you -- if you then go back and re-read all of the comment, and then watch the commercial again -- watching for that "two-second scene" ;-)

Obviously, folks don't have to "know the history of Charlie Brown and Lucy" in order to enjoy the commercial -- it's just that for those who do, there are, in my view, amazing subtle elements -- that make this an outstanding commercial!

I completely missed it until you just said something about it. That was subtle, very clever.
posted 43 weeks ago
Yeah, I had missed it too. Thanks for pointing it out! Definitely makes me like that one more, although I still think the swear word one is the funniest.

My money's on the coca cola one! I think it's funny but in a subtle way, which makes it classier than the other ones. The only one I don't like is umbrella one!

Anyone with a digg account should digg this question!
Anyone without a digg account should get one and then digg this question!

Ha ha. Ill think about getting one just for this question :).
@tisha i agree that umbrella one isn't funny or entertaining. Personally my money is on Swear jar or the Pidgin one. The pidgin one is funny and a good advertisment. The Swear jar is just plain funny.
