<<WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve held its key benchmark U.S. interest rate steady on Tuesday, opting for the time being to soothe rattled financial markets with central bank lending facilities rather than rate cuts.

The problem is that if the Fed lowers interest rates, the dollar will weaken even further and the economy will possibly stumble directly over a cliff. While inflation isn't as much of a concern now, they can't just let the dollar fall apart like that.
