How many more major US cities ban plastic bags from stores before July 25, 2009?

Settled as Zero or one

Although many US cities are considering banning plastic bags, no city with a population of >100,000 has yet voted in the change.

Background:

Background: On July 23, 2008, Los Angeles became the second US city to ban the use of plastic bags. The resolution will take effect in 2010 unless the state of California passes a similar law first. Both laws would charge consumers 25 cents for paper or biodegradable bags.

San Francisco enacted a similar ban in November 2007. Baltimore recently rejected a ban. Seattle and Portland are also considering bans.

A major city will be defined as a city or a county with at least 100,000 residents. Only cities that actually ban plastic bags will count towards this market. San Francisco and Los Angeles will not be counted towards this market.

Does the ban actually have to take place by the suspension date, or simply a decision to enact a ban at a future date, such as the case of L. A. They've decided to enact a ban, but it won't affect until after the suspension date. Just a point of clarification for the distant future of settlement.

Good question, well done!

I wish they would ban plastic money!

The ban would not need to take effect, only be passed into law.

Also, charging for plastic bags does not constitue a ban.

More nanny state lunacy. The whole plastic bag killing marine life issue is the result of an error in a research paper that was citing another research paper about the effects of lost commercial fishing nets on marine life. Land of the free ... was true once upon a time. But they're doing it for our own good!

this is ridiculous. it costs more energy to make a plastic bag than a paper bag.

we should be letting the market find a way to fix this problem. If people care enough then theres room in the market make money UNLESS we make laws that dictate how business is run.

amazing how people can go their whole lives believing regulation is the answer

Maui County, Hawaii, recently banned plastic bags. http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/stories/2008/08/18/daily62.html I am flagging this market to see if counties will count.

@ onedave -- to my read, this question asks, "...before July 25, 2009?"

The information I read in your link states, "...the Maui County Council on Friday passed Hawaii's first municipal ban on plastic shopping bags. The law takes effect in January 2011..."

@newswrangler - We discussed in comment 3 that a ban would have to be passed into law before July 25, 2009.

@ onedave -- yeah, I know. I didn't know if you were asking, as referenced in comment #7, if Maui County would "count", or not. Apparently you weren't. ;-)

OFFICIAL CLARIFICATION - counties with a population of more than 100,000 will also count for purposes of settlement. Let me know if you have a problem with this.

This is going to be a nightmare to settle. I just googled it and there's dozens of cities that have proposed a ban, but very few that actually passed one.
