Are Mahalo and Squidoo roadkill?

Settled as No

Squidoo's visitor numbers were higher in September than in June, so the condition for settling as Yes was not met, therefore settled as No. http://siteanalytics.compete.com/mahalo.com+squidoo.com/?metric=uv

Background:

Background: Google recently introduced Knol which is a service that lets users create pages about any topic they like. Users can elect to have the pages carry Google advertising for which the content creator receives a slice of the revenues. The blogosphere immediately christened Knol as a potential Wikipedia killer.

Do no evil?

Jason Calacanis argues in an exceptionally well thought out article (republished on Silicon Alley Insider) that Google is now crossing the line and competing with its content partners (i.e. Google now is a content company). He draws the analogy between how Google is leveraging its dominance in search to how Microsoft transferring its dominance from the operating system to the application layer (and thus eliminating many of its former partners).

The Google truck takes aim

It seems unlikely that Knol will have any impact on Wikipedia in the short term however there could be other casualties. Bernard Lunn at ReadWriteWeb states:

The companies that are most at threat are those like Mahalo and Squidoo, i.e. semi-automated aggregation plays. These appealed to VCs because they are more scalable than pure-play content. This market appeals to Google for the same reason. Mahalo, Squidoo and others are in the way and the steamroller is coming. They had better be really agile to get out of the way. They look like roadkill to me.

Mahalo and Squidoo rely heavily on Google traffic and commentators have already noted that Knol results are appearing high in Google's search results. Are Mahalo and Squidoo two furry squirrels staring down the on-coming Google Monster truck?

Settlement details:This question will be settled as Yes if Mahalo and Squidoo's people count figures on Compete (http://siteanalytics.compete.com/mahalo.com+squidoo.com/?metric=uv) are BOTH lower in September than they are in June.

Your knol URL link is off-target, Nigel, and points to a German steam cleaning equipment company's website. They are not too enthused about half of the world suddenly stopping by to say hello either. :)

You mean http://knol.google.com

They are probably not too enthused about me calling them German when they are Dutch, either. :)

I believe this is the correct link...
http://knol.google.com/k#

On a happier note, Knol's steam cleaning equipment sales are expected to be way up this month! :)

Ha ha! Never link blind! I've fixed it now but I must say those Dutch cleaning machines look more fun than pediatric sports injuries (front page on Knol)!

BTW There is a article on the site about Google Knol. It is in Dutch but there is one line in English:

NOTE: We sell steamcleaning equipment and don't sell our domain !!

Go Knol!!!

I don't think they're going to threaten anyone too easily with snappy snappy urls like http://knol.google.com/k/chris-stafford/hubdub/ (hint hint - suggestions for changes and lots of upvoting welcome!)
