Will the world’s first practical jetpack go on sale in 2009?

Background: The dream of solo flight has always been one dear to mankind. From Leonardo da Vinci's flying machine sketches to Bell's Rocket Belt. But these dreams and machines never achieved what Glenn Martin is preparing to do in 2009, practical jetpacks!

We've seen them in Science Fiction and James Bond movies. In fact engineers have even built them. In 2009 though, you might be able to own your own. Glenn Martin has spent 27 years developing his jetpacks in total secrecy, they can run for 30 minutes at a time. Way longer than priors which have flown for less than a minute.

Martin's predicted the device can fly at 3,000 feet and plans to sell them for $100,000 apiece starting next year. New York Times correspondent John Schwartz tested the device saying "It felt like living in the future, and, even better, the future we imagined back when it was something to be hoped for rather than feared. "

For the purposes of settlement Glenn Martin's device which isn't completely a Jetpacks is being termed a "practical jetpack.".

Settlement details:As reported by a major mainstream news source. For the purposes of settlement Glenn Martin's device which isn't completely a Jetpacks is being termed a "practical jetpack.".

If the devices go on sale in 2009 the market will settle as yes.

i Think I'd have been working in total secrecy as well, if I was developing something that crappy! Who wants a wearable hovercraft?

chris, this does not work in any way like a hovercraft. a hovercraft reies on a cushion of air that is contained underneath the device, usually by a skirt around the outside of the machine. this has more in common with a helicopter. and he didnt go higher than 6 feet because the machine is not yet reliable enough (imagine the engine cutting out suddenly at high altitude)
