Background:

Battle between Australian and British Sports Ministers over Games medal tally
AUSTRALIAN Sports Minister Kate Ellis has thrown down the gauntlet to her British counterpart, telling him to put his money where his mouth is.
Ms Ellis is challenging British Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe to a bet after his government declared that Britain would beat Australia in the Olympic medal tally in Beijing.
After jetting into Beijing, Ms Ellis said the British were getting a bit ahead of themselves by suggesting they would top Australia for the first time in 20 years.
And she reminded the British of their dubious record when performing in the heat of battle.
Mr Sutcliffe's Cabinet boss, Sports secretary Andy Burnham said Britain would beat Australia at these Games following a $500 million splurge on its Olympians in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympics.
Asked if she took particular pleasure in defeating the Brits, Ms Ellis said: "I am happy to beat anyone, pretty much. I enjoy beating the British but we're happy to beat anyone and I think that most Australian athletes would feel the same way.''

After the Phelp's wins and the UK domination of cycling this is a done deal.

Hope I don't have to eat my words!

Ryan

You just gave yourself a lose-lose situation ryanj - the Aussies outdo Britain on the medal tally and you are down $200, the Brits outdo the Aussies and you will be in big trouble with me!

so how are we settling this? is it whether the brits would finish above the aussies in the medal table (i.e. ranking by gold, then silver etc), or are we just counting the medal tally?

"Battle between Australian and British Sports Ministers over Games medal tally"

Tally = number of medals TOTAL. At no point does orlin mention ANYTHING about number of gold medals. Where dod you see GOLD MEDALS mentioned in the title OR history of this question? This question was created fifteen days ago -- BEFORE the beginning of the Olympics -- don't change the meaning of the question at this late date...

Randburg.

Here in Britain the medal tally has bgenerally been reported as number of golds then silver then bronze (and not just for this olympics). Not that it matters, my money is on Australia either way.

@Tisha Bring it! I'm game :-)

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

Oh yeah by the way I'm an American.....

@james - shame on you! You should be predicting Britain to your very last dollar* - blind patriotism is the rule on this website!

@ryan - I don't think the old dear's competing in these games herself, although I think she might outdo Paula Ratcliffe in the marathon - the one event where never going to the toilet like common people do is a veritable bonus

* I only put H$200 on the question, but that is because I didn't feel like losing it all - I'm already badly enough down on the Premier League...

To clarify above comments, settlement is based on TOTAL medals.
Good luck!

Calm down. I just wanted to clarify because I put a bet on thinking that you meant that winning the war would mean finishing above australia in the medals table. Evidentally, I am mistaken. I might even create a market about this :)

Blind patriotism sure is the name of the game!! Grant Hackett and Eamon Sullivan both cost me dearly, but how can I be mad at them???

What about a tie? Is then the number of gold medals deciding? Or is the question settled as "No" as Gb is not better than Australia?
