Background:

Fort Hays State University debate coach William Shanahan is shown on the video in a profane, in-your-face argument with his counterpart from the University of Pittsburgh during a debate in March at Emory University in Atlanta. Things got out of control when two judges gave the team low scores, school officials said. The video shows Shanahan jumping up and down and ranting about the loss. He then bends over and pulls down his khaki shorts, exposing his underwear.

"We're sure that there's probably some facts and information that's just not available," Fort Hays State Provost Larry Gould said. "I mean, you see a lot on the video, but we need to make sure everything is revealed before we take any action." No one knows what kind of punishment Shanahan may receive, but so far he has not been disciplined, according to The Kansas City Star. Gould told the Star that the Department of Communication Studies chair and the dean of the College of Arts and Science is investigating the incident; he expects the results within the week.

hmmm ... Fort Hays State Provost Larry Gould said, "I mean, you see a lot on the video, but we need to make sure everything is revealed before we take any action."

What?

If this guy's really on the payroll he should be fired. This clown is not playing with a full deck. At the very least, he should forever be made to walk through a metal detector before entering a campus. Phew!

@buckeyetom - LOL... yeah... and the students right to self defense should not be infringed upon... with Profs like him walking the halls all students should be allowed concealed carry on campus

That was a great, awesome video. All those lies I learned as a teenager about adults being more mature just went out the window!!!

Hi,

After reading through the market I've clarified it with this statement: "If by Oct. 31st no news can be found stating that the professor was punished the market will settle as the third option." With this clarification we won't have to worry about the market possibly sitting suspended for months on end. Of course if the University states they won't be punishing him we can also settle based on that.

Hope this clears things up,

Regards,

Ryan

I thought it was awesome that the students remained casual and calm about it -- either sitting in their chairs, or leaning against the wall -- and there were just enough individuals who stepped forward to prevent harm or injury to all concerned. Had it been a room full of "adults", I really think the outcome would have been much different.

Although it's unprofessional for this dude to be "dropping trou" I am sure a percentage of the students walk around every day with their pants at half mast.

I foolishly lose money every time I bet on the way I think things should go (ie. fired or suspended -- it is totally outrageous that he is teaching students this way). Invariably i lose money when I bet on the way I think things should happen... I think i should bet against what I think should happen, and would do better. It seems like the world is getting more and more amoral. Are our standards getting lower, or am i just naive -- (I think i know). Is there a hubdub question there, or not.. likely not, as no objective way to show it in a reasonable time.

@ bigken1 -- I can totally relate! I first predicted "Other/None" ... I think because of a feeling of being jaded about things such as this (coupled with unions and tenure ;-) But, on reflection, I changed my prediction to "fired" (and doubled it just now ;-) Not only is it, in my view, the right thing to do... but there are other faculty, alumni (donors), as well as parents and students (and prospective new admissions) at stake -- and the state legislature -- all of which would, I think, place significant pressure on the University to fire the guy, even if they didn't reasonably know what to do already. Then again, the way things sometimes work, those would all be arguments for "Other/None" ;-)

I have seen a lot of crazy things in my life. So I think we missed the boat on this question. "GIVE HIM A PROMOTION" should have been added as a choice. All those who subscribe to the Peter Principle know how the systems work. This guy hasn't reached his pinnacle yet.

Yes! Affirmative! Done! Thumbs-Up! Fired!

"Dr. Bill Shanahan, assistant professor of communication studies and coach of the debate program at Fort Hays State, violated the faculty code of ethics, university officials this morning said at the conclusion of their investigation."
