The US flag bearer is not normally the athlete with the most gold medals. The honor is often given to someone with a human interest story (1996 Michael R Matz) or someone at the end of their career (Gardner and Hamm). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_R._Matz.

Yeah -- a human interest story ... maybe someone a little inspirational ... like, I dunno, Dara Torres?

Dara Torres: The Oldest Olympic Swimming Medalist in History

"Dara Torres, 41, became the oldest swimming medalist in Olympic history on Sunday. She has twice retired from swimming and has a 2-year-old daughter, but keeps returning to the sport to add to her medal collection.

" 'The water doesn't really know what age you are, so it doesn't really matter when you hit the water what age you are,' Torres said after anchoring the U.S. team in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay, Reuters reports. 'I'm hoping that my age paves the way for other athletes, who maybe think they are too old to do something, to get back in or continue in the sport.' "

1992: Peter Westbrook was the flag-bearer. He did not win a medal in 1992. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Westbrook

I agree, Dara Torres is inspirational - she looked genuinely happy to win the silver, and seemed more grounded than the younger athletes who have based their whole lives around their sport and therefore have so much invested in winning.

Plus, if she can be an olympic medal winner at 41, that still gives me almost 20 years to potentially become an olympic athlete! better start training ...

Dara Torres would be another great choice. However, as she is also a swimmer, this would seem to suggest even further that the starting percentages should be higher for swimming.

Going to review with other SU's and Cat Editors for feedback. I think it's a great question, but based on news and the obvious spike it seems the starting percentages are off here.

While the starting percentages likely could have been higher for swimming, the question will be unsuspended and remain open.

Racket sports is looking good at 0%! :)

Just so everyone knows Phelps won't be at the closing ceremonies.....

Well ... let's see what this does to the market precentages:

NBC reports that Micheal Phelps will not attend the Closing Ceremonies.

In the event that a coach is the flag bearer, this should settle as 'Other choice.'

And I saw on the news tonite that Torres was planning on being home to take her daughter to daycare Wednesday morning...so who from swimming would be worthy of flag duty?

It could still be Lezac

Wanna sidebet on Lezac?

Maybe the American woman who just earned the first gold medal in discus since 1932...at least we're sure she could carry the flag...

"The American flag bearer in the closing ceremony will be Khatuna Lorig, an archer who has represented three countries in her Olympic career: the former Soviet Union in 1992, Georgia in 1996 and 2000, and the United States in 2008. Lorig, 34, who was chosen by fellow athletes, was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, and immigrated to the United States in 1995, but did not get her citizenship in time to compete for the U.S. in 2000 or 2004. Her parents still live in Georgia, where Russian forces have been battling Georgian troops in the breakaway province of South Ossetia."
