Will Pandora close before the end of October?

Settled as No

Pandora still operating at end of October

Background:

Background: Pandora is one of the web's most popular radio stations with around 1 million daily listeners. However last year, federal panel, the Copyright Royalty Board, agreed a doubling of the royalties that web radio stations pay.

For Pandora around 70% of its projected revenues will be paid out in royalties which is unsustainable. Tim Westergren, Pandora's founder, said "We're approaching a pull-the-plug kind of decision. This is like a last stand for webcasting."

The Washington Post has more on the story.

Settlement details:Settled as yes if Pandora closes down or restricts access to the majority of its US services by the end of October.

Happily, Pandora is still producing tunes. They have laid off some employees due to the economic conditions in general, but no reduction in services whatsoever.

I heard about this. Apparantly by the end of october every single legal internet radio will be shut down due to absurdly high royalties. You know the reason why? Because apparantly they are worried about the death of normal radio and fear that it will become expired as a listening device therefore cutting off a larger income then they would ever hope to get from internet radio so they are working together to shut down internet radio.
