Will Hurricane Gustav's Max Sustained Wind Speed Exceed 170 MPH?

Settled as No

Gustav now downgraded to tropical depression. Maximum wind speed reported 35 mph
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iBHjZl2_Eq6vRuqB3ltJYWohaSGwD92UG4NO1

Background:

Hurricane Gustav is predicted to transit very little land as it crosses the Caribbean and enters the Gulf of Mexico http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/#GUSTAV). The lack of such obstacles increases the likelihood of storm intensification.

NOTE - the suspend date has been moved to shortly after Gutav is expected to make landfall, so get your bets in quickly!

Settlement details: The max wind speed may occur over open water or upon any landfall to settle as yes. Location of hurricane at time of max wind speed does not affect the outcome to this question. As reported by http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/#GUSTAV or a major mainstream news source.

I just found the definitions for sustained winds and thought I'd share it for informational purposes:
Most weather agencies use the definition for sustained winds recommended by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which specifies measuring winds at a height of 33 ft (10 m) for 10 minutes, and then taking the average. However, the U.S. National Weather Service defines sustained winds as average winds over a period of one minute, measured at the same 33 ft (10 m) height.

However, who is going up 33 ft. off the ground in a hurricane to make this measurement?

i guess this can be solved. a cat 5 has winds i think at 155 mph. wonder if they still measure wind speed after its a cat 5? i bet on hoping they do.

Speaking from the Gulf Coast (after securing potentially flying debris in the back yard) they do and can measure wind intensity above 155 mph....only problem is can the equipment survive the intense winds...measured winds for Camille were in excess of 180 mph (perhaps higher) but before the storm reached its max, the equipment was blown away...

Personally, I doubt if we'll see 170+ mph winds...storm was weakened over Cuba and is moving so fast that it may not have enough time to get back all of its strength...most of the most recent estimates keep it at a Cat 4, winds up to 155....

This is easy!
Of course it will reach that speed.
Only problem is ...
Who is going to measure it?
