My Predictions

Will it be announced that Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol had a miscarriage before Jan 20

Current forecast: 13% chance
Combining all predictions, the current forecast is that this is 13% likely to happen (unchanged in last 1 day)

Sarah Palin gave birth -- prematurely -- four months ago. But then the internet conspiracy theorists claimed it was really her daughter Bristol's baby. So then Sarah Palin announced that her daughter was pregnant. Problem solved! Of course, if Bristol isn't pregnant, there will be the problem of no child in another 4 months (give or take). If she had a miscarriage between now and then it would be darn convenient.

Don't kid yourself, it would be tragic -- this conspiracy theory is already stretching the realms of credibility. The initial likelihood is set to the proportion of miscarriages in the population of actually pregnant women (see http://www.rcog.org.uk/resources/Public/pdf/Recurrent_Miscarriage_No17.pdf).

Settlement details: As reported by a major mainstream news source. If Bristol Palin gives birth to a healthy child, this settles as "no".

yet, in the settlement details, it states,

So, sorry folks, for more than just a 'taste' issue, I am suspending this market for administrative review.

Let me get this straight – we, as a group, are wagering on the outcome of the unplanned pregnancy of a minor child? dieseldog and I hold the same opinion – tasteless! I'm boycotting this market.

no, it's worse than that!

I was a little taken aback at first too, but if you read the background, this market is probably closer to "Is Trig really Sarah's grandson". IF that conspiracy theory was true THEN its likely that Bristol isn't currently pregnant THEN there will need to be an explanation for why she doesn't have a baby in 4 months time.

Hopefully if you think of this question more in context of the conspiracy theory it will be less distasteful.

If you believe she is truly pregnant, then a healthy 17 year old with good prenatal care already in the second trimester has a VERY small chance of miscarrying so 15% odds are looking pretty good.

Boy, picking Sarah Palin sure has brought the McCain campaign a lot of attention...but I don't think this is what he wanted....

I agree that the question does seem distasteful, but like Jenny said, it refers more to the conspiracy theories out there than the reality of the child's pregnancy. To me the key word is "announce" indicating that if there IS a conspiracy that they might announce a miscarriage when no pregnancy had occurred. The question does not directly ask if she will miscarry, but if they will announce it.

So far, we "the public" have been considering "either/or"...

I hate to bring this up but: what if BOTH of them is/was/are/will/have been having a baby at this time?

Another thought: with all of the emerging stomach-turning stories of heartbreak, scandal, handicap, etc, wasn't she the perfect candidate for an Olympic Gold Medal?

She's two weeks too late...

its one thing to nail obama or mccain, but another to keep making all these questions on a minor. theres some on the site now thats more an editoral from the creator (in the back ground) than actual news. no links to look at to research the question. again i'll defend the right to make them..just seems a bit much for a "family" oriented site to have a bunch of rumour based questions on a kid. steps off soapbox. have a nice day.

The passive voice and "announced" is deliberate -- this is a nutty conspiracy theory (implying that Bristol Palin is not actually pregnant, and it's all a cover for [the prior nutty conspiracy theory of...] her being pregnant before). I think it speaks to her character that she's having the kid and marrying the father. It's a shame the media is going crazy with this story -- even the Daily Kos crowd dropped it quickly.
