Will there be three active hurricanes in the Atlantic at the same time during September 2008?

Settled as No

This event did not occur in September.

Background:

Hanna, Ike, and Josephine are all lined up and ready to make their way across the Atlantic. September is normally the busiest month of hurricane season; there's an average of 1.1 hurricanes per year during the month. But it's not common for there to be three tropical storms at the same time, much less hurricanes. Will we see that rare event this month or will we be lucky enough to avoid such a mess?

Settlement details: As reported by the NHC at nhc.noaa.gov/.
Should be settled as yes if, during any update cycle (posted at 4 AM, 10 AM, 4 PM, and 10 PM daily) there are at least three storms listed as hurricanes. A storm that previously was a hurricane and became downgraded to a tropical storm will not count toward the total; all three storms must be hurricanes at the same time.

This question -- specifically -- asks about three HURRICANES in the ATLANTIC at the same time in September. NOT tropical storms or depressions. Each would have to be Category 1 or higher AND in the ATLANTIC at the same time. NOT another body of water.

Most interesting question! We might need galoshes to watch this question settle...

Wow. For the first time all month, there's nothing out in the Atlantic basin right now. The NHC is no longer issuing advisories on Ike and there's only one system that has a low (<20%) chance of developing within the next five days.
