Background:

Background: Think you know what makes a good start up?

TechCrunch50, the start-up launch conference brought to you by Mike Arrington, TechCrunch and Jason Calacanis kicks off today. From the 52 hot technology companies that unveil themselves to the world there, only one can win the $50,000 Best in Show prize. Despite sounding more like a dog prize than a coveted industry accolade, all 52 companies will be clamoring to be the chosen ones and join Aaron Patzer, last year's winner with Mint, on the Internet start-up A list.

You can see all the companies and their ideas here: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/09/08/announcing-the-techcrunch50-finalists/

It's the battle of the start-up jump-starters: Mike Arrington says 'Demo needs to die' !

@jenniandboys - yes, custom made, we wanted to give every startup an equal footing starting out and not limit it to only 10 like other questions.

What the hell? Is there a way to have this many questions when someone else hosts a question?
posted 1 year ago
Nope. It's a special feature. Maybe in the future?

I wonder if the people who are joining up and putting all their money on their own product realize that they are creating negative karma for themselves here. It's like prediction spam -- they're pammers ;-).

Personally, although I'm not big on web advertising at all, I found this presentation by Adregate excellent. It's almost a textbook lesson in how to present your start-up in 6 minutes. He's confident yet not smarmy, and by the end you know exactly what they do, and why it's a smart idea. Listen to how the experts speak to him at the end. With genuine respect. http://www.techcrunch50.com/2008/conference/presenter.php?presenter=58

isn't it weird how the names for startups all seem to be a popular misspelling of a word, or a compound of two short words?

I like "Shryk" - they say it is "Web-based financial software for children aimed at promoting financial literacy and good saving habits". I wonder if it would tell customers that people who have good saving habits would not spend their money on something like this! LOL

@tisha - kind of like hubbub?

@jenni - hubwhat? Don't they make custom bicycles?

  11 tisha[Admin]
@jenni - actually we have the eminence of being named by the CEO's (then) two year old son, which makes us far superior custom bicyclemakers!

Akoha getting a lot noise on Twitter. They still haven't presented so we will see if it is just that, noise. I think Yammer, OtherInbox and Adgregate were the winners on day one.

DotSpots was kind of cool too.

Seeing all the comments on twitter I'm certain that Akoha will beat out OtherInbox.
