Background:

Background: Many political pundits have repeatedly commented on the importance of the Presidential Debates in helping voters make up their minds. In an election year that's spanned for more than an actual year many Americans get tired of the constant coverage and see the debates as a clear and open forum to decide on a candidate. This year with so many hot issues such as the economy in the news Americans are looking for answers.

This years first presidential debate takes place on Friday, September 26th at 8PM CDT. It will be moderated by Jim Lehrer, the anchor of The NewsHour. The first debate focuses mainly on Foreign policy and national security. In 2004, 62.5 million people tuned into first the debate. In 2000, 46.6 million people watched the first debate and in 1996 only 36.1 million. With such a polarized electorate there's a very good chance the first debate will be the most widely viewed yet.
