Will there be a second Pulpit Freedom Sunday before the 2008 US Presidential Election?

Settled as No

On September 28, thirty-three pastors from 22 states endorsed a presidential candidate during their church sermon. This initiative, called Pulpit Freedom Sunday, violates a 1954 law that prohibits non-profit organizations, like churches, from publicly endorsing a political candidates. Violation of the law could cost the churches their tax-exempt status.

The campaign has not been supported uniformly by religious leaders. 55 religious leaders have filed a complaint with the IRS against the initiative. An additional 180 religious leaders are countering the initiative.

This market will settle as yes if any religious leader endorses a candidate during a sermon under the Pulpit Freedom Sunday banner.

Wow, I hadn't heard about this. My pastor says some crazy stuff, but thankfully he hasn't crossed that line.

@jenni...if a pastor says vote for canidate X is that crossing the line?

@dieseldog: I think if the pastor's name is Jeremiah Wright, then it is OK to talk about it. For other pastors there may be a problem...

@diesel - Yes, I think a pastor specifically endorsing a candidate is crossing a line. Some people might think that's an acceptable line to cross, but I don't.

i agree it's a matter of one's opinon. imho the govt-irs should tell any preacher what they can or can't say while giving a sermon. if a member don't like it they can go to another church.

Here are some interesting links about what the muslims think along these lines:

I am sure there are other religions that have tried to become active as a group too, & it would be interesting to see a list
