US Election 2008: Will the people vote for Osama?

Voided

Market voided. Re-writes are necessary which would change some of the intent of the market place, safer to void market and resubmit clean market than change market once wagers have been placed.

Background:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's last name is spelled "Osama" on hundreds of absentee ballots mailed out this week to voters in Rensselaer County.

Officials say the flawed ballots were sent to approximately 300 voters. On row 1A Barack Obama's name is spelled Barack Osama.

McDonough said the absentee ballots went out to voters in Brunswick, Nassau, Sand Lake, Schaghticoke and Schodack with the error. So far three people have called to point it out, he said. Those people will get new ballots sent to them.

One Sand Lake resident who caught the misspelling, and who asked to remain anonymous, was skeptical.

''It's a little suspicious and at least grossly incompetent,'' the voter said. "If I crossed out the name and wrote in the right spelling my ballot would be invalid."

http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=728326

Will it be reported that ballots with the typo "Osama" are posted - without being invalid - and the ballot is casted to "Barack Osama"?

I am positively OUTRAGED by this. The bloody 'S' key and 'B' key are NOWHERE NEAR EACH OTHER.

This is clearly a partisan cheap shot and a potentially damaging one at that.
I can't believe where this election has taken the nutters in this country.

I hope when McCain/Palin are defeated they are returned to their respective current positions and recalled or impeached.

And the idiot responsible for this 'typo' needs to be publicly identified and fired.

Barack is connected to terrorists - that is true. I never made any sweeping statement about his supporters, although some of them obviously are.

My statement was a reference to how much apparent hatred is displayed by the left toward anything Republican. Americans first noticed the left's derangement whenever the topic was our President (George W. Bush). Now it is has spread to other topics - Sarah Palin, John McCain, the War on Terror, General Petraius, Justice Clarence Thomas, Vice President Cheney, and so forth.

Now appears like some on the left would believe the stories from detainees in Guantanamo before they believe men who have commited their lives to keeping our country safe. To some of them, Barack's long time friendship with a known terrorist is "no big deal", but Sarah Palin better not have fired an "at will" employee! They act as if Osama bin Ladin may have a point [that America somehow deserves his ill will], and they have no compunction to comparing President Bush to a Nazi!

That is what I am talking about. I hope that clears it up. Bigots will always be called out - and that has no place in a reasoned discussion.

I'm fairly certain a majority of liberals in America do not think or act as if "Osama bin Ladin may have a point," and it is incorrect to state that most liberals "have no compunction to comparing President Bush to a Nazi." It's just like how conservatives aren't all the lying hatemongers some liberals make them out to be and that most of them are intelligent middle-class people who hold different views, instead of CEOs and other assorted multi-millionaires buying their fifth or sixth beach houses when their taxes get cut. This is clearly an example of the Straw Man Fallacy.

<<<Now appears like some on the left would believe the stories from detainees in Guantanamo before they believe men who have commited their lives to keeping our country safe.>>>

Yeah, like Cheney and others who, for the most part, lined the pockets of their cronies with yours/mine/our tax dollars. And let's not forget the 'moral' right who demand that their view of the world become yours/mine/ours.

When I was just a boy ...
I really struggled to come to terms with what was right and wrong.
The Republicans were forever invoking images of how grand this country would be if, only if, I agreed with them and voted for their candidate.

We all remember "Tricky Dick" Nixon.
And how Reagonomics "Trickle Down Ecomony" didn't.
Then Bush, and Bush the younger.

The whole time, the rich got richer, and the rest of us went on about our lives thinking surely somebody just has to care.

Well, I am through with the noble causes of the far right. And while I won't race to the far left, consider me one who will not vote for any Republican as long as I have a mind of my own.

I have found that "the Right" just isn't right. So, I'll try the left, which certainly doesn't mean "wrong".
posted 7 weeks ago
.....
A: its the right. They call it the right. Therefor its Right. Understand? Right, is Right.
B: Your invoking presidents as examples of how this country suffers. Let me explain something to you. The president has few powers. Very few. He makes the occasional military decision but he doesnt decide to go to war. He appoints a few people who arent required to report back to him and are pretty much there for 4 years even if they decide not to listen to the president. And he can veto a bill which senate can just vote on again and pass it. He doesn't have power over the cabinet, he doesn't have much power over the military, and he doesn't have much power over the senate. Blaming brilliant presidents such as Reagen and Bush for problems that are the senates fault is crazy!

In a President, we are looking for a leader. I fully understand that they themselves do not get much done, besides signing bills into law. (Look at Bush 43 for instance.) But, policies are the means to which they invoke their leadership. "I will NOT sign a bill that does such-and-such", is an example of leadership, however poor.

In order to lead, you need to know the mission. You need to know what your assets are. You need to know what possible obstacles may present themselves.

How can McCain lead this nation out of an economic crisis, when, until just recently, he considered the economy "strong". He himself (and his campaign) have made muted attempts to justify that McCain's lack of economic policy experience was not that important. If that is the case, how can he lead?

While that is true, I feel compelled to point out what Obama said on September 18th.
"Argue With Neighbors, Get In Their Face"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCMDur9CDZ4

The divisiveness in our country creates a climate similar to a sporting event, complete with cheerleaders and fan support. My concern is that our leaders (on both sides of the political isle) do not participate in a Republic any longer. Our Republic is supposed to chose leaders who will carry forth the wishes of the electorate while using their best judgment to make final decisions that effect our country as a whole.
posted 7 weeks ago
  42 emmag
That's it? In context, it was quite appropriate and certainly not hateful.
posted 7 weeks ago
@cognos Yes they do require some leadership skills however whenever you get a person who only devotes his time to one party (like bush) you cant get anything done because 50% (or in bushes case 60%) of the senate wont give a damn what you have to say and wont listen to you. Now McCain unifys boths sides of the aisle. He is technically a republican but agrees with the democrats on many issues. He will unite our country. Obama on the other hand hangs out with only extreme liberals and wont pay attention to the other side. He ignores and blatantly insults republicans. He wont be able to lead us into a paper bag.
As for what McCain said about the economy he was (and is) right. The fundementals of the economy are strong. I can gauruntee you the us economy isnt going bankrupt anytime soon. The fundementals means the basics. As soon as last january what you have seen is a very bloated economy that at the base is very strong. What you are seeing right now is the economy losing some of that bloatedness. It may fall for another 1000 points until it goes back to the base of the economy. Let me try explaining this another way, the us economy was and is strong. We are among the strongest economys in the world. That means that we arent going anywhere. It doesnt mean we will always prosper. It just means we are going to be here for awhile. I understand what im saying is a little confusing but thats just because its hard to put to words what it means to have the fundementals of the economy be strong and thats probably why McCain hasnt been able to to rebut what Obama is saying.

@Enmag:
That is not "It" - but just one example.
If McCain had said the same thing, would you would be railing against his oppressive and hateful rhetoric.
Obama says it and everything is OK??
Can you say "double standard"?

Here is a video of McCain / Palin supporters trying to hold a peaceful march in a well known liberal town.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQalRPQ8stI

From my perspective, it is the liberal left that has generated the most divisive attitude inside politics today.
When has Obama ever tried to reach across the aisle to create ANY legislation that was inclusive of opposing viewpoints, or conservative lawmakers?

If you do not believe me that is fine - I propose an experiment.
We can take an issue that has equal political bias from 2 different viewpoints,
and post a thoughtful yet opposing viewpoint on 2 equally biased national blogs,
such as http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/ & http://www.dailykos.com/
The point of this exercise would be to see which side provides feedback that contains more vitriol & angst - left or right.

P.S. I will be out of touch for the next few days with a very busy schedule. Please do not let my lack of activity here indicate a lack of enthusiasm for this topic.

Chatarra -- the liberal left has not called anyone on the right a terrorist. Nobody on the left is questioning the patriotism of those on the right. It would be nice if people like yourself could just come out and admit that you can't deal with the idea of a black man, particularly a highly-educated black man, being president of the United States.

The idea that Barack IS connected to terrorists is absurd. William Ayers is a freak. He's also an upstanding member of his community, a university professor, homeowner, etc. His connections to Obama are pretty distant according to the mainstream press. Beyond which, it's been a damned long time since Ayers engaged in anything terroristic.

You can respond to this however you want but the fact is, Obama is ahead in every single poll and in three weeks he will claim victory.

@Chattara i watched that video. The whole time i just wanted to deck those ignorant asses in the face. If i saw a democratic march i would just let them express there opinions and move on. Just like whenever McCain gives a speech he gets people interuptting him every third word yet when Obama has a speech republicans (generally) are to polite to interfere. I know that jsevigny or someone is going to post a video of some speech where Obama was interrupted but< usually that doesnt happen. Every time i put a sign that says McCain/Palin 08 i get it torn down that night. Yet my neighbors with a Obama sign have never once had it taken. So finally, after my 4th sign i had had enough so i grabbed his sign and knocked it over that night. Now there is a neighberhood watch to make sure that doesnt happen. @dragon: the red on the election coverage map was actually swapped for blue at the last minute, but historically left leaning movements were identified by "red".

Some examples are "Red China", the flag of the Soviet union, the "redshirts" under Geribaldi.

The term "red-state", as opposed to "blue-state" was coined by Tim Russert, as far as I know, and he applied it to an election results map - not a political persuasion. (There are liberal republicans and conservative democrats, to illustrate this)
posted 7 weeks ago
.. It has been for awhile at least, that republicans are red and democrats are blue. If you want to address him as a democrat, dont use a method that was used once by a guy, and used on a election results map once awhile back, use the commonly accepted method.
posted 7 weeks ago
... the problem is not that he is a democrat. It is his political bent. He wants government health care, he has been pushing government schools, he want government involved in everything, and the government to take our money. I realize that many democrats do feel this way, but certainly not all. JFK lowered taxes, for instance. More recently Zell Miller, Bob Conelly are some modern day examples. Not that I agree with everything, of course, but they are not "red".

My dearest dragon and notable...

I propose a compromise solution... we will use the red and blue only in the context of red state/blue state (as coined by Tim Russert) to graphically depict voter preferences in the various states

This unofficial system used in the United States of America is a stark reversal of political colors in most other long-established democracies, where blue represents right wing and conservative parties, while red represents left wing, communist and socialist/socially liberal parties

Sorry for the delay in my post - I work 2 jobs and when I am really tired, my postings come off sounding very angry, which is not the way I want to appear.

@ jsevigny:
My concerns with BHO have nothing to do with his ethnic heritage.
It is the way he will ruin our country that concerns me the most.

I do not want our government to run more of our country. My biggest disappointment with Bush is that our government has become bigger under his watch. I want smaller government with less intrusion into our lives. Government run health care scares me - I picture something like the drivers license bureau only bigger and more crowded. Our public school system is a joke as well. The inmates are running the asylum.

During the 3rd debate, Obama said he would provide a college education to every young person who wanted to receive one. (There are not enough colleges in the country to handle 30 million extra students) According to MSN Money - "The price tag for a college education rose again last year. Tuition and fees increased 14.1% for public four-year institutions and 6% for private schools, according to the College Board. The retail cost of a college degree has more than doubled in the past two decades, far outstripping the regular rate of inflation."

Obama doesn't say how he is going to pay for this, but he has broad appeal to an entitlement generation.

As for Ayers, I think it is being blown out of proportion too. The real underlying issue is to see how Obama has a history of questionable friendships – from unrepentant 60’s radicals to overtly racist preachers.

I am not so sure about an easy victory in 3 weeks. He has still to win over the biggest voting block – the bitter, gun toting, religious angry white older population in America today.

Me and Pulloverthatasstophat are already stocking up on guns and bibles for if he does get elected.

I do think the argument for "everyone gets a degree" is an interesting one. It brings to mind: http://www.indiana.edu/~intell/bellcurve.shtml which in part discusses the fact that some people are just smarter than others. Do people who intend to be car mechanics really need to learn Biology and Western Civilization in college? On the other hand, our culture is increasingly making college an extension of High School, whereby almost any job requires a college degree (even Fast Food managers!) and then the "higher level" jobs require post graduate degrees. Its like everything is shifting. Its an interesting trend in our society that I think should probably be reversed, but not sure how that would happen.

Anyway, I came over here to answer an earlier question about how the "everyone goes to college" would be paid for.. answer: tax credits for service. http://www.barackobama.com/issues/education/#higher-education

Thank you for your reasonable answer, Chatarra. We all work hard, I think, and sometimes we take out our agressions here (myself included).

Look. From where I'm standing (somewhere left of Lenin and Lennon according to my soul brother dragon) government health care and government schools are not bad things.

In poor-ass Mexico where I live, health care is free. The economy here is like a third the size of that of the United States. And the tax rates are generally lower. If a third world country can provide something as basic as health care to its people, why can't we? Canada has a much better system, of course, but nobody calls Canada a socialist country.

I agree that the public school system in the States is a joke and I sometimes feel like the butt-end of that joke. But that means we need to overhaul it, not eliminate it. Just my opinions.

I do, however, truly believe that much of the "discomfort" some people feel over Obama has to do with race. I apologize if I have wrongly made that assumtion about you.

@Jennie:
Thanks for the link on how Obama plans to pay for his education plan.
<<Obama and Biden will make college affordable for all Americans by creating a new American Opportunity Tax Credit. This universal and fully refundable credit will ensure that the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans, and will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average public college or university and make community college tuition completely free for most students. Recipients of the credit will be required to conduct 100 hours of community service. >>

So if I read this right, he is proposing to pay the equivalent of $40.00 per hour for community service. This would presumably include menial labor (that should be done by prison inmates) like picking up litter along the highway, or putting away clothing at Goodwill stores.
This fits into my old belief that nobody gets what they are worth. Everybody is either under or over paid.

I have been practicing the following slogan for the time when Obama may win the ticket:
My tax dollars are going where? ! ? ! ?

I have heard horror stories about both Canadian and Mexican doctors. I have a phobia of being at the hospital so I avoid reading many accounts of medical malpractice, as it only feeds on my preexisting paranoia.
Probably, the largest criticism of Canadian health care is the wait time. Another is the lack of qualified medical professionals, which is probably due to the pay differential that would come with nationalized health care. Although in fairness, they do have an abundance of nurses.
