Market voided. Dubplicate
Background:>
The 2008 Glenrothes by-election will be held in the United Kingdom Parliament's House of Commons constituency of Glenrothes in Fife, Scotland. This constituency adjoins that of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
The seat fell vacant after the death of previous member, John MacDougall (Labour), who died of mesothelioma, on 13 August 2008, aged 60. The by-election is set for 6 November 2008.
The result in the General Election of 2005 was:
Labour John MacDougall 19,395 51.9%
Scottish National Party John Beare 8,731 23.4%
Liberal Democrats Elizabeth Riches 4,728 12.7%
Conservative Belinda Don 2,651 7.1%
Others (3) 1,861 4.9%
The turnout was 56% of the registered electors
Since then (25 July 2008) the SNP have of course overturned a very large Labour majority in the Glasgow East consituency, turning the Labour majority of 13,507 into and SNP one of 365 votes.
Also since then, Scotland has been shocked by the effect of the economic crisis on Scotland's two major banks - Bank of Scotland and Royal Bank of Scotland. These events have caused questions to be asked by some parties regarding the appropriateness of Scottish Independence.
