Will unemployment in the UK hit 2 million by the end of the year?

Suspend date reached

Background:

The jobless total leapt by 164,000 to 1.79 million between May and August, the highest rise for 17 years, it was revealed yesterday, providing stark evidence that the economic slowdown is forcing firms to lay off staff.

Amid warnings that unemployment could reach three million, the Prime Minister, speaking at an EU summit on the financial crisis, promised that the Government would do all it could to protect jobs. He pointed out that, despite the 10 per cent increase, unemployment was higher in America, Germany, France and Italy than in Britain.

The 1.79 million total out of work is the highest since 1999 and compounded the economic gloom on a day that the FTSE 100 Index's two-day revival came to a halt as it slumped by 7.2 per cent amid renewed recession fears.

Unemployment is now on course to hit two million by the end of the year and an economist, Vicky Redwood, of Capital Economics, forecast that unemployment could hit three million by the end of 2010.

Settlement will be based on the first report in 2009 that gives the complete figures for 2008.

Settlement details: As reported by a major mainstream news source. The unemployment measure will be the numbers unemployed and actively seeking work according to the Labour Force Survey, which is the government's preferred measure of unemployment (the preferred measure of unemployment before 1997 was the claimant count, which is significantly lower). This will be determined by the first report in 2009 that gives the complete figures for 2008.

"In mid-2007 the resident population of the UK was 60,975,000." says statistics.gov.uk. So probably 61,000,000.

I just saw the video that notablenotices posted. It doesn't really prove anything, does it? It could easily be photos of one nuclear power station and another missile facility. The most dangerous things I saw were a radioactive sign, some missiles and some planes. Not really weapons of mass destruction, are they?

I imagine that the UK government will minimize the damage, just as the US government will...

@filinator well considering that they were banned and prohibited by the un and the missles were long range i guess it depends on how you define wmd. Me i define it as weapons of mass destructions and long range missles would certainly qualify if used properly
