Will Dexter fan and filmmaker Mark Twitchell be found guilty of murder?

Suspended

Suspend date reached

Background:

Background: Now I like the show Dexter because it is funny in a dark way, and is really well written and acted. But I have often wondered if the show does not cross a line into making serial killing okay if there's a "good" cause, at least to impressionable minds.

Now this. A young Edmonton, Canada filmmaker, Mark Twitchell, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Johnny Brian Altinger who disappeared in early October after arranging to meet someone he believed to be a woman for a date over the internet.

The accused, who presented themselves as a fan of Dexter on Facebook, had written a script which includes numerous strong similarities to the facts as known about this case, including luring the victim via the internet on a date with a beautiful woman to a garage where he would be killed. Mr. Altinger had informed a friend that he was going to a certain address on his date. The address turned out to be a garage where Twitchell was ostensibly making a film. Although the missing man's remains have not been found, police allege that there is sufficient forensic evidence at the garage to charge Twitchell with first-degree murder.

Rather than try to paraphrase the other numerous strange details of the case, I suggest you read:

N.B. For the purpose of this question, "guilty of murder" will include being found guilty by a court of any degree of murder or of manslaughter, pleading guilty to any such charge, and being found not guilty by reason of insanity. In other words, the question boils down to, did he do it (in a legal sense)?

Initial likelihood of 55% Yes, because the story is almost too filmic to believe, yet the charges have already been laid.

Settlement details:As reported by a major mainstream news source. Should be settled when the result is known (suspend date is not binding).

The executive producer of Dexter has responded (in a thankfully human manner without the CYA blahblahblah):
