Who will fill Joe Biden's Senate seat?

Settled as Someone else

Delaware governor Ruth Ann Minner (D-Del.) has appointed Joe Biden's longtime senior adviser Ted Kaufman to succeed Biden in the Senate.

Background:

Background: Joe Biden won two elections yesterday - he is both Vice President Elect and retains his Delaware Senate seat. The Governor, Ruth Ann Minner, now has the responsibility to name someone to take Biden's seat until 2010, although its possible that she could delay the decision until her successor, Jack Markell, takes office in January.

There are several strong candidates for the seat, but the decision will likely hinge on whether the Governor is looking for a temporary seat filler or someone who will maintain the Senate seat as a career.

Background on candidates

While numerous names have been thrown around, Pika mentioned Delaware Supreme Court Chief Justice Myron Steele and Secretary of State Harriet Smith Windsor as possible appointees to the role, both of whom would fit into the "only serving for two years" category.

Most of the buzz, however, is around Lt. Gov. John Carney, a Democrat who lost in the gubernatorial primary race to newly elected Gov. Jack Markell, and Joe Biden's son, Attorney General Beau Biden, who is currently serving in the National Guard.

I think Ms. Windsor or Justice Steele will serve as a placeholder until Beau Biden finishes his tour of duty in Iraq.

BKisser, that wont' happen.

In order to take a seat the person has to be the same partisan party of the leaving member. As Palin is a republican, she cannot take Biden's seat.
