Who will fill Barack Obama's Senate Seat?

Settled as Someone Else

Background: With last night's historic election, Illinois will need a new Senator. Governor Rod Blagojevich has the honor of naming someone to fill the seat until the next Congressional election in 2010. There have been a variety of names bandied about lately, but Jesse Jackson Jr seems to be receiving the most buzz so far. Who will get Obama's seat?

Valerie B.Jarrett, a trusted adviser to Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, may also be a candidate to succeed him in the U.S. Senate if he should win the White House.

Topping the list of other possibilities is Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. From Blagojevich’s political vantage point, sending Madigan to Washington, D.C. could head off a possible 2010 gubernatorial challenge by the daughter of his political nemesis, House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Among those on the short list are Democratic U.S. Reps. Jan Schakowsky, Rahm Emanuel and Jesse Jackson Jr.

Senate President Emil Jones, D-Chicago, also is a potential pick.

Rahm Emmanuel is Chief of Staff? That pretty much rules him out completely.

Yep, but we didn't know that at the time the market was created. I wouldn't be putting h$ on him right now, that's for sure!

In a letter received by the committee Friday, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald asked the special investigative committee specifically to not subpoena President-elect Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, incoming chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Nils Larsen, a Tribune Co. executive vice president.

Fitzgerald said any such subpoenas "would interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation into the activities of Governor Rod Blagojevich and others."

the gift that just keeps on giving :O)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid didn't want Rep. Jesse Jackson in the Senate, a point he made clear to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in a conversation about filling Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

I wonder just WHO Reid will find acceptable.

i don't agree with his ploitics but i think reid is proablly a good person. he use to be a boxer so don't wanna make him to mad. from listening to the talk show his reason for not wanting jesse jr was that he couldn't win the seat in the next election. he'll have egg on his face if jesse jr runs and wins.

Reid also said that he did not tell Blagojevich that appointing three African-American lawmakers -- Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Danny Davis or state lawmaker Emil Jones -- would be unacceptable.

"He's making all of this up. I had a conversation with him, I don't remember what was in that conversation other than the generalities ... I didn't tell him who not to appoint," he said.

Reid added that Jackson Jr. "is somebody that I think would be a good senator."

Reid said the dispute is not about racial politics, adding, "Anyone to suggest anything racial is part of the Blagojevich spin."

They have to seat him by law.

What they should have done is hold the special election. Unfortunately the Dems were so scared of a republican possibly winning that they rather have the corrupt Blago make the choice. A little TOO partisan for my tastes.
