Will the "Fairness Doctrine" be reimposed during Obama's first term?
Background: Several prominent Democrats, including Dick Durbin, Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, and Chuck Schumer, have argued for reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, which would force broadcast media stations to be "fair and balanced" in their political programming, giving time to both political perspectives. In June 2008 a spokesman for Obama stated that he does not support reimposing the Doctrine.
According to an article in The Hill, "Conservatives fear that forcing stations to make equal time for liberal talk radio would cut into profits so significantly that radio executives would opt to scale back on conservative radio programming to avoid escalating costs and interference from the FCC. They also note that conservative radio shows has been far more successful than liberal ones."
This question will be settled as a "yes" if an agency (e.g. the FCC) or bill reinstates the Fairness Doctrine.

You don't like Obama. We get it.
You love the 'I'm louder than you' antics of Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh. We get that too.
But you are factually incorrect again. Try bringing a legitimate source to the table when you make these claims.
Here's mine proving you are wrong:

Face it. The Fairness Doctrine is a terrible infringement of Freedom of Speech. How soon is it until all parties and views are forced time on the air? This is an absolute attack on speech and capitalism.
This would only pertain to radio broadcast which incidentally is conservative based. This is an attack on ideology and that is something America has always claimed to be free of.
To agree with this is really quite ignorant.
I would like to see some balance in the news.
I would like to have someone give me the facts without the guffaws, eyerolls, subtle inferences, but a law/act is not going to do it.
The internet however is doing it; I just have to be motivated. I want news I read many sources before I take it as gospel, and even then I still question.
I think there would be a better chance of equality reporting if more people stood up and said "Enough is enough" got off their lazy.......... and instead of expecting MCPaper to spoon feed them the news went out and looked for it and researched it themselves.
Imagine an entire country of SMART people!
Although cloaked in the flag by it's name; The Fairness Doctrine... it is literally something quite different. In recent years conservative talk radio has flourished while similar programming for liberal based shows has not enjoyed the same success. This is the free market at work. Radio station owners are sensitive to what is preferred by their audiences and Nielsen ratings, support for advertisers, etc. bears this out. There is certainly nothing as organized or conspiratorial as a VRWC that is causing Conservative radio to enjoy success, it is simply preferred as a format by a larger audience. The Fairness Doctrine seeks to subvert this with a mandate for equivalent time allocated to both viewpoints, which itself seems odd and third and fourth viewpoints would likely clamor for equal access soon also. My suspicion is that The Fairness Doctrine, by name, will not be vigorously pursued by the new Administration, but it's effect will be, via another name, such as a requirement for a ratio of programming that is locally based vs. nationally syndicated shows, this could easily have the same result but be a more palatable means. Settlement may become dicey on this one, but I and many other talk radio fans will be watching and listening closely.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate has barred federal regulators from reviving a policy, abandoned two decades ago, that required balanced coverage of issues on public airwaves. The Senate vote on the so-called Fairness Doctrine was in part a response to conservative radio talk show hosts who feared that Democrats would try to revive the policy to ensure liberal opinions got equal time. The Federal Communications Commission implemented the doctrine in 1949, but stopped enforcing it in 1987 after deciding new sources of information and programming made it unnecessary. President Barack Obama says he has no intention of reimposing the doctrine, but Republicans, led by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., say they still need a guarantee the government would not establish new quotas or guidelines on programming.

Minutes after the passage of the ‘Durbin amendment’ last Thursday a separate amendment that would ban the restoration of the Fairness Doctrine, which was proposed by Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), was also attached to the same D.C. voting rights bill and passed by a vote of 87-11.
