TV seems primed for some good fantasy, with the economy in shambles and many Americans too depressed to enjoy reality. HBO has ordered a pilot for George Martin's Game of Thrones -- there are currently plans for 7 books in the series which could potentially create a 7 season series. Generally the danger for fantasy series is the prohibitive special effects cost, but Martin's series is more character focused with the majority of battles happening off screen. The success of this season's True Blood may suggest that HBO is prepared to branch out into the genre a little more for next season.
After Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth novels, and now Martin's I'm just waiting for news on a Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. For that, I would pay for HBO!
