Presidential Inauguration: What verse will Barack Obama's Bible be open to?

Settled as Closed Bible

Bible was closed

Background:

Background: It is customary for the incoming President to use a Bible to administer the oath of office at his inauguration. Every President since Rutherford B. Hayes has used a Bible at the inauguration marking his first full term.

George W. Bush used a closed family Bible at his 2001 inauguration. Bill Clinton's Bible was open to Galatians 6:8 (New Testament) in 1993 and Isaiah 58:12 (Old Testament) in 1997.

If two Bibles are used, this market will be settled as, "other option." This market refers to the public inauguration.

@onedave - that's an interesting market - I was toying with doing a King James vs NIV market, but I kind of think I like this one better.

New Testament, Matthew, King James Version, Chapter 5 verses 3-12
Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Emphasis on Verse 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I, for one, am unclear about the settlement issues. The problem I have is the following. Wouldn't the Bible , if used, be either new or old testament? If so, isn't that complete (with the choice not used) in the mathematical sense? So that other options are parts of these sets, etc.. so the choices are not independent. For example, it could be a closed old testament Bible -- How would this settle? Hope this is clear.

bigken1,

I've never heard of a Bible that is one or the other...that is if it's an 'official' Bible anyhow.

Only Jews use just the Old Testament. Christian Bibles whether they be KJV or NIV or any other types have both the Old T and the New T.

He's going to use the Lincoln Bible, which is both Old & New Testaments, King James Version. The question now is if he will open it...

NOw I understand. It deals with which part it is open to... I misunderstood the two word responses... ( i found these two words not related to the other parts of the questions...)... well, sorry for misunderstanding..

He will use the same bible Lincoln did. That's pretty cool.

Has it ever been customary to lay your hand on an open bible while being inaugurated?

move to strike last comment. just re-read background.

i pledge to hold him in contempt if it's open to some old testament verse with the exception of that part in Ezekiel where God has Zek cooking his food over human turds. that would simply incite my curiosity bout the guy.
