Will wind energy be less expensive than fossil-fueled electricity before 2018?

Background: Portuguese wind power producer EDP Renewables expects to pay less for its wind turbines after 2010, Chief Executive Ana Maria Fernandes said on Wednesday, reaffirming the company's growth targets till 2012.

"Obama's election increases the chances that recent positive renewables legislation in specific states is brought into force on a federal level," said EDP Renewables Financial Director Rui Teixeira.

Here's the catch-22. If we spend the time and money to build an alternative energy infrastructure it will lower demand for oil and suppress the price, and everyone will say, "look at the time and money we wasted." However, if we slack off, like we have for the past 35 years, the price of oil will be sky high and everyone will say, "see, I told you we should have done something."

@ converse: good point, but there's always going to be a massive base level of oil consumption for which no alternatives are feasible in the forseeable future. Also, the fact that OPEC are determined to keep the price of oil at an artificially high level by restricting supply means that we have to reduce our dependence on oil wherever possible to stop the price of things like air travel going through the roof in the coming decades

Hubdub should institute that practice, as I suggested in a comment a few months back in the Technology/Hubdub section. Nothing would make the site, which mostly has long-term bets, more attractive than compensating long-term bettors for their patience. right now, it's too often like watching paint dry.
