Will FORD and GM merge to save themselves in 2008?

Settled as No

There was no merger during 2008

Background:

When survival mode kicks in people will do just about anything to stay alive. Will Ford and GM pull together and come out of their financial mess by the end of 2008? An agreement to merge in 2008 is all that is needed for this to settle as Yes. The legalities can be completed later.
Airbus did this in Europe to compete against Boeing. This could be Ford's and GM's final and only workable option. A federal bailout doesn't look like it's coming and chapter 11 will destroy their supply chains.

Settlement details: As reported by a major mainstream news source.

They should if it will keep them both in business. BUT, keep the Ford name. Important in American history. Assembly line, etc. An icon in America. But, no bailout. Let them make a decent car like the Japanese do, like Benz and Volvo and Audi. Enough with making crappy cars. It's no wonder no one wants them. They are crap for the most part. I have a Benz with 36,000 miles that will last for the rest of my life if I maintain it properly. Let's see American car makers do that for me. Then, I MIGHT consider an American car after driving a foreign car for over twenty years.

Somehow I get the feeling that they are not that desperate. They just sense a chance to get some "free money" and are making a pitch for it. When they start trimming their wasteful spending and reducing their costs to remain competitive with foreign manufacturers, then any talk about further drastic measures would seem more serious, in my opinion.

Ford have already said that they are financially sound, there is no reason why a competitor should help another out it just doesn't happen
