US school children will be allowed to submit essays before January 25. On or around March 22, 2009, NASA will name nine finalists, three from each of three grade ranges. The public will then have a week to comment on the finalists. The winning name will be announced on or around April 16.
The first three rovers were named in similar contests. The winning names were Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity.
