The company must actually be removed by Dow-Jones. If declares bankruptcy but is still on the official list it doesn't count as gone.

Interesting question. GM will likely be the first to go though several others probably won't be far behind. What makes it interesting is, what would replace the outgoing company on the index?

The S&P 500 index is in very bad shape for example. Nearly 200 out of the 500 no longer officially qualify to be part of that index as their market cap is below 4 billion.

Does this mean that if one goes in the first quarter I win with options 1,2,3, and 4 - or are each of the first four options intended to be limited to events "during that quarter"

Still a bit unclear - what I mean is if you take the fourth option, one going in February would still have gone by December 31

In these sorts of questions, it's usually understood that each option stands alone...if you wager on the first quarter and it happens then you win, but all others would lose. Options should by before March 31, then April- June, then July -September, then October- December, and finally after 12/31/09.

I'll see about adjusting the option terms to clarify this.

Good point Guido...but if GM were to go, shouldn't it be replaced by another company from the same or a closely related industry? And what auto maker would qualify to replace it in the DJIA...? Don't they try to keep a balance of companies related to all the different economic sectors? Same thing for Citibank, another possible weakness in the DJIA...who would replace it?
