Gold versus the DOW. Which will shine brightest at Friday 28 November

Settled as DJIA ahead by 1-100

DJIA wound up ahead by 67.1.
DJIA at 8829.04
Gold at 815.85
882 minus 815 = 67

Background:

On Friday 21 Nov the DJIA closed at 8046.42
Gold closed at 791.80
For this question we use the first 3 digits of the DJIA and the whole dollar digits of the spot gold price, ie starting market is 804 v 791.

If DJIA goes above 10,000 or gold goes above $1,000 we can make it up as we go because we are all smart enough to do that. It is an interesting market in these times. Where are people going to put their money?
In the milleniums old safe haven of precious metal or in 30 of the biggest and best run companies around. (Well most of them still qualify as such.)

I have used CNN money for the source for the final gold price although for live tracking gold I find <a href="http://www.nymex.com/index.aspx">www.nymex.com/index.aspx<;/a> to be better during trading, but the quotes disappear at the end of the session.
CNN money is the best site I've found for live tracking the DJIA.

Market suspends 1 hour before NYSE closes.I have entered this as
1500hrs EDT. If anyone thinks this needs correcting please let me know. Happy picking. Pete.

Settlement details: DJIA closing price 28 Nov 09 as quoted on <a href="http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=DJIA">http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=DJIA<;/a>

Having a DJIA question open during a trading session on the day it suspends sort of goes up against the rule regarding live play. Question should suspend at the opening of the NYSE on Friday morning at the latest to require a bit more predicting to the wagering.

Thanks for pointing that out Bear. I'll flag it for advice. I would like to see how it works as it is based on the buzz I get playing your DJIA closing price question.

Damn. I just spotted a flaw in the question. Should be using first 4 digits of the DJIA and the gold price including the first decimal to maintain balance. Starting price would be 8046 DJIA v 7918 gold. I'm sure everyone kinda gets that anyway based on the wagering so far. I'll flag it if someone requests but I would like to let it run and adjust it next time if it works out.

I bet this question using the first 3 digits as stated in your example. It's like with any first time question of quality, you tweek it on the second posting and not after its been significantly bet on the first time out. Post this again next time with a new example. This is a very good question. Thanks for posting!

I don't think there's a need to worry about the 3 vs 4 digit issue. We can use a traditional rounding method for the numbers, or just call them straight up. Perhaps if there is a tie, we can go back additional numbers to settle the issue, but I think comparing the first 3 digits is fine for the time being. You've already addressed the possibility of either amount going above 10,000 or 1,000, so I think it can be figured out.

Thanks for an interesting question!

I'm sure this will work a lot better using 4 digits of the gold price and suspending at least the day before NYSE opening. Any comments appreciated before I relaunch it. Pete.
