Toronto's TSX or New York's DJIA - which will be higher at the end of 2008?

Settled as Toronto's TSX closes higher

Toronto's TSX closed 2008 about 220 points higher than the DJIA.

The DJIA closed out the year Wednesday at 8776.39, while the TSX finished its trading for the year at 8997.70.

The TSX wound up trading on Wednesday, the final day of 2008, with a gain of a 156.98 points, or 1.78 per cent, to 8,987.70.

Background:

On Nov 24th, the TSX closed at 8440 while the DJIA closed at 8443 - which leads to the question of which will be ahead at the end of the year.

The TSX is more heavily influenced by commodities and oil, whereas the DJIA is more influenced by banking and big businesses such as General Motors.

Canada has had a balanced federal budget and a sound banking sector whereas the US budget and economy seems to be in disarray. On the other hand, there's some optimism that the new administration of Barrack Obama will bring hope and inspiration to the US.

Very nicely done...a good way to bring in another exchange to create greater interest.

I will be adding an image and adjusting the date to suspend a few days earlier. Markets like this are best when they suspend 5-7 days before the expected outcome is known. Allows for more predicting than reacting.

Thanks
