Authorities are investigating reports that suspects involved in the Mumbai terrorist attacks in India were British or had ties to Britain.
A spokesman for the Foreign Office in London said the British had opened an investigation related to the attacks but cautioned that the reports had not been confirmed.
A report on Indian television quoted Vilasrao Deshmukh, chief minister of India's Maharashtra state, saying two British nationals had been among the gunmen arrested.
In addition, a German legislator of the European Union who was trapped overnight in one of the assaulted hotels told reporters in Brussels, Belgium, on Friday that she had heard reports that Britons were involved. It appeared that her sources were Indian journalists.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his foreign minister said Friday that it was too early to draw conclusions.
"I'm afraid I can't tell you anything about the names or origins or sources of this attack at this stage," Foreign Minister David Miliband said.
